Jim was the DJ at our wedding 11-19-16. He did an AWESOME job. With us being in our 50's, we like 70's, 80's, country, a wide variety of music. He really did a good job of mixing it up. We loved all the music. I left a lot of it up to him, and he did perfect. I would highly recommend him for your DJ needs. Sally & Mike

This was the first time I ever hired someone off the internet and was very pleased with the result. Greg was personable and professional. He met with us and told us what to expect and he came through beautifully. This was a 50th wedding anniversary and the music chosen was perfect. Everyone had a good time. He came early for setup and everything was done before the first guest arrived. He was concerned about what we wanted and performed well. We were very happy with his service.

Nico was the photographer for our wedding this past August and we are very happy we hired him! We had an outdoor wedding on a very hot summer day, and he was very professional and patient, accommodating each and every request for a group shot. We needed suggestions on some locations to take wedding party photos between the ceremony and reception, and he was ready with some great ideas, willing to follow along behind our limousine halfway across the city. We received the photos about 3 weeks after the wedding, and were very pleased with the variety and quality of the shots he took. Nico was very easy to work with, his rates were quite reasonable for a full day of wedding photography, and the photos look great. We would absolutely recommend him.

Dennis really met all of our needs for a very reasonable price. He was flexible, fun to work with, professional, and creative. He accommodated all of our requests both in the engagement session and at the wedding, and he used his own creativity to get some really cool artistic shots. We couldn't be happier with the photos and how they turned out. Everyone who has seen them is really impressed and many have asked who our photographer was! Not only were we impressed with the photography itself, we were also impressed with the timeliness of the photos. We have heard from others that their wedding photographers took months to get their photos back after the wedding, but Dennis got ours back to us in less than 2 weeks! And we get to keep all our photos on a flashdrive with a release to print them wherever we choose. This was really important to us, and it was included in the price. Overall, we're really happy with how everything turned out and we are glad we chose Dennis to be our photographer!

I hired Terri and Gary to photograph my casual wedding reception at a bar and they did a fantastic job. They managed to photograph all of the about 100 guests and got some great portraits of me and my husband as well.

Garrett is absolutely wonderful to work with! One of my main concerns as a bride was to find a trustworthy and reliable vendor and he met every one of my concerns! Garrett offered creative ideas and was open to my ideas and incorporating them into the video. He is very reasonably priced and really impressed me with his ideas, sincerity and reliability. I haven't seen the finished product yet, but I'm sure Garrett will do an amazing job. I highly recommend him if you are looking for a wedding videographer!!!

We asked Josh to DJ our wedding. It was a very simple wedding ceremony and reception and we didn't want traditional DJ services. Josh was attentive to all of our requests and he made our event memorable. We met with him twice to discuss everything and he was extremely accommodating. We would highly recommend him to others!

I hired Melissa to photograph our outdoor wedding. I can't believe how great her pictures turned out! She did an amazing job! I am one of those people who usually hate pictures of myself but every single picture in this bunch is just perfect! She took great candid shots of us during the ceremony, and fantastic family shots and wedding party shots after the ceremony. Plus, her attitude was just so friendly and hardworking. The day of our wedding was a really hot day and we were taking pictures outdoors after the ceremony and she kept wanting to take pictures, even after we had plenty already. That is commitment to quality, considering how hot it was! And seriously her pictures turned out amazing!

Sheila has done many photography shoots for me personally and professionally for the organization I work for. She is AMAZING at capturing the essence of who we are with little to no direction, which is very important when we are super busy during events. I would definitely recommend her for a variety of different media: fashion, events, weddings, portraits, and more!

Loved working with these guys! Darren always responded to my emails in a decent amount of time, no matter how ridiculous my question was. Darren showed up and took great pictures of our wedding. The pictures look amazing and not to posed. Love the candid, real feel of the pictures. Between the 2 photographers I felt a bit like a star. They were always there, yet you didn't notice them either. It was perfect! Thank you to both of you for doing such an amazing job!

My husband and I had the pleasure of working with Bill for our engagement and wedding photos in September of 2011. Bill is professional and reliable, and extremely talented in his ability to story tell through photography. Not only was the quality of our photos stunning, but his attitude and easy going nature helped us relax during our big day, letting our happiness (instead of nervousness) shine through in our photos. We will not hesitate to contact him in the future for our photography needs.

Fuzion Videos did an awesome job recording and editing video for my wedding. They were very professional and walked me through what would happen. The end result was more than satisfying. The highlight video and the wedding video was well done and worth the money spent. I am very thankful for Fuzion Videos and the job that they did. I would highly recommend them to anyone who is looking to have video work done.

It has been nothing short of an absolute pleasure working with David and Sarah (his wife and partner-in-photography) from the first time I spoke with him on the phone. We hired Realife Photography for an engagement photo session in Sept. 2014 and for our wedding on Sept. 5, 2015 at the Audubon Center. David and Sarah have such an amazing vibe- they work so well together, and they are super friendly, funny, creative, and low-key. I don't love having photos taken of myself and was nervous for the engagement photo shoot, but David totally allayed all my nerves by throwing some goofy ideas in with the serious ones, which was perfect for me. It really put me at ease, and the photos turned out beautiful and natural. At the wedding, David and Sarah were an absolute dream to work with. They were accommodating and easy-going, managed to both remember all the important shots I wanted while also being totally invisible during the ceremony and reception. Everyone in the wedding party loved working with them. And the photos are AMAZING! Of the 1300+ photos David sent us, there literally is not a single one that I'm unhappy with. My biggest challenge now is figuring out which ones I want to frame because I want to frame all of them, and all of them reflect who we are. So often when looking through wedding photography, it seems that the photographers are more interested in showing off their own artistic skill and so the photos end up being more about them than about the people or the feeling of the day. David takes the exact opposite approach. He really focuses on us, and uses his skill to elevate the specialness of the day rather than making it the focal point. My favorite thing about David and his company is that they captured the spirit of the day in the most magical and natural way possible. While he did capture some of the important and beautiful details of the places and things, the focus of the photos were 100% on me and my husband, our families, and our friends. You can really feel the joyous energy through the photos, and even when you're looking at a photo and thinking, "woah what a cool angle!" or "dang that's such a unique way to have used the landscape" or "woah look that lighting!", the very first thing you see and the feeling that stays with you is that the photo says something about *us,* and that is so invaluable and, I think, rare in wedding photography. I couldn't recommend Realife highly enough. They were such a joy to have with us on our wedding day, David has been and continues to be so responsive and accommodating, and the photos are such a treasure. I promise you will not go wrong with Realife Photography!!

Robert & his Team at FINAO Wedding Design & Event professionals made us feel like we were more than a client, but as best friends. They really listened to our wants and needs for both the wedding ceremony and reception. The theatrical entertainment they pulled off at the reception is still a magical wonder, but either way our guests of 325 were in awe! I am always telling my coworkers and friends to hire FINAO for any event! They have connections that you can't look up online or in the yellow pages. They have partnered with the most amazing DJ who makes his own art. My now husband and I could not agree on a song for our first dance so FINAO's DJ seamlessly mixed the two together without skipping a note/beat. We decided to order an Ice Sculpture for our reception and WOW! With all that said Robert kept inside our budget and made sure we were involved throughout the entire planning. INCREDIBLE!

Prairie was so great to have at our wedding reception! She was very sweet and hardly noticeable (I know that sounds weird but I’ve had photographers in the past that want to drive the event and take over and cause too much stress). We have her flexibility on timing but she did not abuse it at all. She stuck around until she got all of the best shots and did such a great job. We didn’t get a chance to meet before our event but she did exactly what I was looking for. Just a bunch of fun shots of people having fun and dancing the night away. Thanks Prairie!!

Bonnie is a talented photographer and a wonderful person! We have had the privilege of having Bonnie capture some very important moments for us- from our wedding to maternity pictures to family portraits- and we can't say enough about how much we love the images Bonnie has created with us! Bonnie is very flexible and versatile; we have done studio sessions, a shoot in a park, wedding photos (ceremony, portraits, and reception), and even family photos at our home. Bonnie is great with our daughter, too! She has great vision, a wonderful personality, and her pricing is competitive and affordable. I can't say enough about how much we LOVE working with Bonnie!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a videographer and what do they do?

A videographer professionally films weddings and other events and edits the footage to create film keepsakes or marketing materials for their clients. Wedding videographers record all the key elements of your wedding day, ceremony and reception, and then edit the hours of film during post-production to make a wedding video, social media highlight reels, and any other film features you choose. Wedding videography captures, in live action, your vows, the cake-cutting, the first dance, reception toasts, the decor, the guests and all the details of your day. Many wedding videographers also interview guests (based on an interview list provided by the couple) and incorporate the recorded responses into the wedding video. Event videography typically costs less than wedding videography, as events are shorter with less detail. The national average cost for event videography is $500-$760, while the national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. A videographer usually does not need to be licensed, but it is important to confirm they have insurance and good standing in the business community, as well as good client reviews. A great majority of the work happens during post-production. The pros watch and blend together the hours of footage they took (sometimes from multiple cameras) to capture the story of your wedding day or event.

How do you choose a wedding videographer?

A wedding videographer will create a lifetime memory for you from edited video footage of your wedding day, ceremony and reception. Choosing a wedding videographer starts with looking online at portfolios of their past work. There’s no need to talk to anyone unless you love what you see. Next, make sure they have good reviews and past client experience; don’t be shy about asking for references if there aren’t any posted online. When you find someone who has a style you love, ask if they are available on your wedding day. If so, it’s time to talk pricing. Be clear about your maximum budget, and ask what kind of packages they offer. Pricing will depend on the number of crew needed for filming, the hours they are required to be onsite, post-production editing, and the length of the final product. Talk with several wedding videographers to get a feel for what prices are like in your region. Nationally, the average cost for wedding videography ranges between $990 and $1,260 per event. Once you agree on a product and have a plan, get everything in a written and signed contract. Clearly state the details of what is expected for your wedding day and from the final product. Be prepared to pay a deposit to reserve their services for the day, then pay the remainder upon receiving the video.

How much does it cost for a photographer for a wedding?

Finding the right wedding photographer can make a big difference for your ceremony. Nationally, the average wedding photographer’s price ranges from $800 to $1,000, but costs can be much higher in areas like Chicago, New York or Los Angeles where some couples spend $2,000 to $5,000 or more for the photographer they want. Factors that can affect your wedding photographer prices include the photographer’s reputation and experience. Heavy hitters can command top rates, especially during wedding-season weekends. Day of the week also affects your cost. You may get a $200 discount on wedding photographer prices if you get married on a Friday in November rather than a Saturday in June. Time onsite is also an important cost factor. Hiring a photographer to snap photos from the moment you wake up until after last call at the reception is going to cost more than five hours of pictures during the day. Multiple photographers, special lighting, and videography will also increase your costs. Ultimately you want to find someone who has a style you love and can provide the number of edited shots you want for a price you can handle. Learn more about hiring a wedding photographer.

What should you ask your wedding videographer before hiring?

Finding the perfect wedding videographer doesn’t have to be stressful. Asking a few key questions upfront will help you find the right fit for your big day. Before talking with wedding videographers, research their work online. Look at their websites, business profiles and social media, and see what their finished wedding videos look like. If the style fits what you’re envisioning, it’s time to reach out. During initial contact, make sure you get along with the person. This is important since they’ll be interacting with you and your guests.

Your first question should be about their availability; there’s no point in going further if they’re booked on your wedding day. Ask to see references if they’re not readily available online. Next, it’s time to talk about money. Ask how they determine rates or what kind of packages they offer. When you settle on a rate and the services you want, make sure to have a written contract that outlines everything, including cost, length of time they film, what post-production will include, and when you can expect to receive the edited project.

When do you pay your wedding videographer and wedding photographer?

Most wedding videographers and photographers require a set deposit when you hire them. Wedding season is a busy time and a deposit secures that vendor’s services for your wedding date. It also protects the vendor if the couple changes their mind at the last minute, and they can’t find a new booking and lose work for the day. The deposit may be anywhere from 20 percent to  50 percent of the agreed-upon total price. Always get a written confirmation that your deposit has been received.

The remainder of the wedding videography and photography bill may be due in the week before to your wedding or on the day of the wedding. Other vendors may require a second payment immediately before the wedding and a third and final payment after the wedding video or photos are delivered. Each vendor has their own policies, so before hiring be sure to read, understand and agree to payment protocols. There is no requirement for tipping wedding videographers or photographers, but if you do want to tip them, the end of the reception is the appropriate time.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
