Christina's effective methods lowered the stress of the whole college application process for both our daughter and us, her parents. While Christina applies a much appreciated, organized step by step approach, she viewed our daughter as an individual and brought out our daughter's strength. At Christina's suggestion, Lizzie applied to a small, well regarded, liberal arts school that we otherwise would not have known much about. Not only was Lizzie accepted, but she was awarded a substantial scholarship. We are looking forward to a wonderful college experience. Thank you, Christina!!

Renjie is patient & encouraging. Great personality, and a perfect match for my kids. He helped increase both of their ACT scores, which also carried over into improving their GPAs. He is also very dedicated, working around busy high schoolers schedules. Renjie also tutored my 7th Grader in Math. She was struggling half way through the year, and after a few sessions with him, there was a huge improvement. Her teacher commented on her progress and her grades increased dramatically. She continued to work with him throughout the school year and looked forward to her sessions, as he calmed any anxiety she had before tests and with tough homework.

I am really happy with the progress my sons, 10 and 8, have made with Joanne. We live in Japan where they attend Japanese public school so although we speak English at home, both boys were behind in their reading skills, especially my youngest boy, who was also very resistant to reading. I knew I needed help to get them reading more so I googled online reading tutor and Joanne’s site popped up. We quickly set up a time for her to meet my sons. She was so personable and encouraging. They really enjoyed the first lesson and all subsequent lessons, even though they are at 6am due to the time difference. Both boys have improved so much in 8 months: the oldest has gone from a 1st/2nd grade level to a 4th grade+ reading level; the reluctant youngest went from a pre-k to end of 2nd grade level where he actually wants to read chapter books. They are much more confident with their reading too. Both boys still struggle with English vocabulary and comprehension because their schooling is in Japanese, but Joanne continues to help them build these skills. I would highly recommend Joanne to anyone whose children are struggling with reading.

My son, age 7, diagnosed with apraxia of speech (and possible reading disorder), visited Mrs. Dunham 1-2 times per week during the summer of 2017. She planned appropriate age and skill level reading intervention for my son; the summertime reading intervention definitely helped my son prepare for the 2017-2018 school year in second grade! I valued Mrs. Dunham's knowledge and experience, and I appreciated her helpful tips to find beneficial resources for my son. I am a satisfied customer.

After, 18 years I decided to go back to school and complete my degree. I was lost and struggling with my classes. Then I was recommended to Jason, and with his one on one tutoring service I manage to get that GPA to a 4.0. I have even used his services for my son that is a senior I. High school. I recommend him for anyone who is struggling or perhaps needs a little extra help with school work.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

  • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
