A gutter pulled loose on my garage, was going to do the repair myself until I realized there was wood that was going to need to be replaced because of rot! Jeff gave me a reasonable estimate and was able to get the job done ahead of schedule. Will use him again in the future when the need arises!

Joe and Walter did a great job repairing long sections of rotting wood trim on the exterior of our house. They worked efficiently. Joe completed the work for the price we agreed upon in advance even though it was a bit more involved than he expected (and I was happy to pay a bit more than agreed upon to compensate him). The work took three days to complete and each day they left the worksite clean and orderly. Communication was excellent and Joe was punctual. If this sounds different than many contractors, you're right. Joe is much better than most and will use him on other projects in the future. Later this year he will drywall, mud, and paint the inside of my garage.

FENCE The job we needed done was a fence installation. I got 5 bids, but Steamatic was the best offer. We got a permit, talked with our neighbors and had diggers hotline come out to mark utility lines. (FYI talk to your neighbors. They can complain to the city and give you problems about your fence even if you are within city codes) We ordered a wood fence with two gates which was delivered by Home Depot. Few days later the posts were set into the ground. We had a long fence installed- 6ft lining the backyard, 4ft adjacent to the house with one gate in back and another on a side. Home depot did not deliver the gate latches we ordered. Bo picked it up at another location so the job would get done. The fence is great and we are very satisfied. If you need a fence, large or small, call Steamatic for a quote with options on pricing. Al

Their employees are awesome. I had so many questions replacing my very old cedar fence. With their help (letting me bring samples home), getting cap color samples and making sure all my questions were 100% answered I decided on the wood look vinyl. Aaron and his group have been so considerate. I'm looking forward to my fence install within the next few weeks.

I contracted Arteaga fence to complete a chain-link fence around my back yard so that I would be able to let my small dog loose in the yard without constantly having to be on a leash. Lucio met with me promptly and discussed all of the options I had. He worked with me to select the appropriate type of chain-link, gauge and material and also came up with a plan to accommodate several challenging landscaping features (bushes on the border of the property). The installation went smoothly, and I (and my dog) am extremely satisfied. I highly recommend Arteaga to anyone in need of fence work in the area.

Our roof was an absolute horror. 92 years old, with 7 layers of shingles including the original wood shingles from 1924. Don't ask me why -- long story. Al's crew did an amazing job. Work was fast, efficient, on target and in budget. His calm, professional demeanor was especially appreciated, as were his problem solving skills (Needless to say, there were some unanticipated issues under a roof that was nearly 100 years old). I never felt like he was trying to SELL me anything - but rather trying to help. And help he did.

I hired Stateline Deck & Fence to build a small (8"x12") deck. I am extremely pleased and I highly recommend them. They were easy to work with and the value of the finished deck far exceeds my expectations for the price. My background is in computers, so carpentry is not something I know a lot about. A couple of years ago, I tried using a big box retailer to subcontract a deck and it was a total disaster. They sent unqualified people and it was such a nightmare that I waited over a year before taking a different approach and hiring a carpenter myself. Although it was a miserable experience, I sure learned a lot. I learned to make sure that the person in charge is educated and qualified to do the work. When I met William Cunningham, I had no doubts that he was the right man for the job. He answered all my questions and concerns clearly and left me feeling like I could depend on him to get the job done right. I have many friends and family that are contractors, and I have great respect for their work ethic, but I also value education very highly. Being able to hire a carpenter with a college degree gave me even more confidence that this would be a completely different experience than what I had to deal with using the national big box company. Once construction began, William was onsite himself for the entirety of the project. Along with one other workman, he completed the deck in only a couple of days and made sure to let me know that he guaranteed his work. They were very polite, clean, and surprisingly quiet. It was very easy for me to work in my home office while they worked outside. It has been over a month since the deck was completed. My wife and I love it and spend most evenings out on it grilling and relaxing. I have received many compliments for the craftsmanship and even have had friends who paid obscene amounts of money for composite decks express envy for my simple little wooden deck escape. I cannot stress enough that this is the company that you want to hire. I plan on using them in the future and I am very grateful to have come across them. Did I mention that they were by far the lowest estimate? Just awesome, thank you again.

I've seen his work at my neighbor's, and can't wait to start a project at my house. He knows the right way to do all contractor work, both complex and simple: place a countertop, lay a floor, build a bookcase. His work at my neighbor's is just like his work in his own home.

Hugo, Victor and their crew did a phenomenal job. I was very impressed with their craftsmanship and attention to detail. They built all the panels for my 6' cedar fence and 4' chain link just the way I wanted. They even worked in the rain to get my fence done in two days. I enjoy my new back yard so much now that I don't have to see the busy parking lot on the other side of the fence. It has even improved the air quality in my yard. Thank you, Meija Fence, for the beautiful job you did for me!

Jorge has so many talents, I ended up using him for most of a major house rehab. This was the sixth house I've rehabbed and it was great to have one contractor knowledgeable about so many things so I didn't have to wait on each specialty. Jorge drywalled, laid a wood laminate floor, put up baseboard, put in 2 toilets, ran plumbing and put in a new dishwasher, put up baseboard, ran a water line to the refrigerator, put in a new kitchen sink and countertop, leveled a wobbly ceiling fan, hung closet doors, as well as other things. He was there when he said he would be, worked until the job was done, and was pleasant to work with. I highly recommend him and will use him again.

James has done several jobs for us in the past few months. He installed a storm door, sided & painted our garage and carport, and built a custom wood fence for our back yard. His work is excellent and he is easy to work with. He returns calls quickly, shows up when he says he's going to, and completes work as promised. Honest, trustworthy, and talented. Highly recommend to anyone.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much is a redwood fence per foot?

A redwood fence is a long-lasting home investment that can add beauty and major curb appeal to your home. Redwood fence installation costs are higher than those for pressure-treated pine or cedar, due to the relative scarcity of the wood. Pricing can vary for redwood fence installation costs based on regional labor rates, current prices of redwood planks, the height and linear feet of the fence, and any custom designs or features. Redwood fences, in addition to being beautiful, are naturally more resistant against bugs and rot than less hardy or dense woods. Redwood fences also generally fare well in wet or humid climates due to their natural oils — which also make them easier to maintain. Materials costs per linear foot for redwood planks can range anywhere from $6 to $20 or more, depending on grade, quality and height.

How much does it cost to put up a chain-link fence?

Chain-link fence is one of the most affordable options for adding safety and value to your home or business. The national average chain-link fence installation cost is $2,750. Chain-link fences are relatively simple for the pros to install; a fence of less than 150 linear feet can often be put up in under one day. A good rule of thumb is to add an additional workday for each additional 100 linear feet of fence to be installed.

Chain-link fence installation costs are affected by the fluctuating cost of steel, regional labor rates, the height of fence you select, and the features you select, such as a powder-coated finish. The industry standard is galvanized steel, which is rust- and corrosion-resistant. Galvanized chain-link fence installation cost, including labor and materials, is typically $12 per linear foot. For a more contemporary and elegant option, black powder-coated galvanized chain-link fence might cost approximately $15 per linear foot on average, including materials and labor. For industrial sites or businesses, 10-foot-high galvanized chain-link fences may provide additional security, but also have an added cost. A 10-foot-high chain-link fence could cost $17-$18 per linear foot, including labor and materials.

How much does it cost to install a vinyl fence?

A new fence can mean added home value, increased curb appeal, and improved home security. The national average vinyl fence installation cost is $4,600. Vinyl fences have a number of appealing qualities such as their durability, their lasting good looks (they don’t weather like wood does), their versatility, and the fact that they require little to no maintenance such as staining. Fencing companies typically charge per linear foot for vinyl fence installation. They calculate their estimates based on materials to be used, height of fence, linear feet of the proposed fence, and the accessibility of the terrain. If the workers need to level the land before work begins, your vinyl fence installation costs will probably increase. Vinyl fences are typically more expensive than wood or chain-link. For example, one company might charge $19-$22 per linear foot for a basic 6-foot vinyl privacy fence. Another company might charge $25-$35 per linear foot for standard vinyl fencing, while decorative fencing with custom detail could increase that cost to $50 per linear foot. For a 6-foot-high white vinyl privacy fence with two walk-through gates (plus demolition and disposal of the old fence), the cost of the total project could run $8,000. A 4-foot-high, 36-linear-foot white picket vinyl fence with one gate could cost $2,600.

How much does it cost to install a wood fence?

Help define your property line, protect your home and yard, and boost your curb appeal with a new wood fence. The national average for wood fence installation cost is $3,250. Wood fence installation costs will vary based on your geographic location, the type of wood you select, the height and style of wood fence you desire, and the condition of your property. Pressure-treated pine is a common and attractive choice that is usually resilient against rot and bugs. Cedar is another budget-friendly option that, although more expensive than pressure-treated pine, can be more affordable than redwood or teak. A wood fence requires maintenance to ensure its long-term health and beauty, so keep future staining and painting costs in mind when you’re calculating fence installation costs. Here are some examples of how height and material affect the approximate cost of wood fences:

      • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $15-$17 per linear foot.
      • 4-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $13-$20 per linear foot.
      • Cedar fence: $18-$25 per linear foot.
      • 6-foot-high, double-sided (meaning both sides are uniform), pressure-treated pine fence with 6x6 posts: $25 per linear foot.
      • 12-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with custom detailing: $75 per linear foot.
      • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with a custom lattice top: $30-$50 per linear foot.

How much does it cost to install a fence gate?

Adding a gate to your fence can be a practical way to provide access to a yard, work area or outdoor living space while ensuring safety and privacy. Gate installation costs will vary based on the gate material you select, the size of your gate, whether you install a fence at the same time, and any special features you’d like to add. Standard opening size for a single-wide gate is 4 feet; a double-wide gate is 8 feet. A small gate may be for decoration; a double-wide gate can be mounted on a rolling caster system to allow access for cars or wide loads. Here are some examples of average fence gate installation costs:

      • 4-foot, single-swing chain-link gate: $100 for materials and installation costs.
      • 28-foot wheeled chain-link gate on a caster system: $800-$1,000 for materials and installation costs.
      • 4-foot, single-swing wood gate: $75.
      • 8-foot double-wide wood gate: $150.
      • 4-foot white vinyl walk-through gate: $300–$400 for materials and installation costs.
      • 8-foot, double-wide white vinyl gate: about $800 for materials and installation costs.
      • White vinyl gate fence more than 8 feet wide: $1,200-$1,500 for materials and installation.
      • Arched black powder-coated aluminum pool gates: $175-$200 per gate.
