The service was fast and reliable. My things were moved all the way from my place in Los Angeles to my dorm in New Orleans with no broken or missing items. I found the service provider to be very professional and easy to get in touch with when I needed to. I fully recommend this moving and storage company! 5 stars!

I have moved 6 times in the last 14 years. 5 were interstate and this 6th was within state. Even then the work requires skill, dedication and care. I will admit that I found "Alliance Moving & Storage" to be the best so far in my experience. I had a crew of 4 from them to provide me & family with full packing service. Overall it took 6 hours but they did a great job, right from being on time, disassembling certain furniture, wrapping, packing, moving, delivering, unpacking & assembling, all with great care. The crew lead Alex is a great guy to work with, attentive and directing as required his team very well. Together they did a fantastic job without breaking or damaging anything in the entire process. I would recommend "Alliance Moving & Storage" to my friends or colleagues or to anyone for that matter, who need a really professional Moving service to take care of their goods, as if its their own, during a move. Very happy that I took their service.

I highly recommend A+ Decorating. Very professional, high integrity, reliable, and very neat. Our job took several days, they cleaned up & neatly stored everything before they left every day. They gave me info. to make informed decisions & showed me receipts for materials. We've had other work done before & I was greatly impressed & completely satisfied with their work. I will definitely hire them them again for other jobs.

I hired Chicagoland Moving & Storage to move me from Chicago to Denver. They were very responsive and the owner came to my home and gave me an in person quote with absolutely no hidden fees, which remained unchanged from start to finish. The price was very competitive and they delivered my belongings to Denver, in their own truck - not shared with another family, exactly when they said they would (and much faster than other movers could), in just 2 days with no additional cost for expedited delivery, unlike many competitors. There was nothing broken or damaged and both crews (those who packed my stuff in Chicago and those who unpacked me in Denver) were extremely friendly and professional. I would highly recommend them for both local and long distance moves. Thank you for the stress-free move!

Excellent service, on time, personable. We have a massive sort of bedroom suite (bookcase headboard, 2-part storage base with drawers, and a very heavy chest/dresser), and they managed to get everything up to the second floor via a narrow stairway with a 180 degree turn with no damage to furniture or walls.

Jason from Liberty Moving & Storage was awesome from a planning and logistical standpoint - he was incredibly knowledgeable as well. Esteven was the crew manager for the course of two days. Day 1 focused on packing, with Day 2 being the actual move. He was incredible!

Derek and his company were amazing. Worked to fit me in on their very tight schedule. Beyond expectations in their care and knowledge in moving an eliptical for me. Worked efficiently and helped move something else, in order to get the eliptical in. Amazing! Will certainly re-hire and refer people to.

Charletta did a great job! I needed a light move out cleaning. Charletta showed up and I left to continue moving into my new place. She called to tell me when she was done. The place was immaculate. She did great work even though our landlord cut the power in our place.

This company gave us a quote to move our furniture from Mequon, WI to Southaven, MS. Their quote was reliable as they never wavered from the amount that they originally quoted. They advised us of what they would be doing from the time they finished packing until they delivered the furniture. After packing two trucks of furniture they advised that they would rest then drive to Southaven. After arriving in Southaven we received a telephone call advising us that the movers were going to get a few hours of sleep then they would come to our house to start unpacking. After they rested for a few hours we received a phone call advising us that they were on the way to our house to unpack the first truck. When they arrived at our house they unloaded the furniture efficiently. They placed furniture on our main level and upstairs as directed without incident. They were very careful when moving the furniture and all of the men acted professionally at all times. We are very happy that we selected Hungry Man Moving for our move. We would definitely use this company again if we need to move in the future!

I was a little skeptical moving with this company as I have always moved myself or used a big name moving company. I received quotes from the big name companies and was shocked at what they were going to charge me, plus it would be days until my items would arrive as they were going to unload my things in a warehouse and reload when they found another move going to the same place. That was unacceptable to me. I contacted Mark and asked him for a quote and what their process for moving was. I explained what I was moving, sent pictures and he sent me a quote. Very affordable, his method made sense, he would rent the appropriate size U-Haul truck and his team would come in and load and drive to your new location and unload, then return the truck and drive home. No overhead or need to wait for another load and your things stay locked in the same truck until it is unloaded. This process again made moving more affordable. I asked for references and Mark gave me several to call. The references gave glowing reports so I went ahead and hired them. The group came on Tuesday to load the truck in Delafield WI and arrived and unloaded the truck in Fishers IN on Wednesday (5 hr drive). (I boxed my stuff up prior to their arrival) They were professional, personable, quick to respond and made a stressful process comfortable. I had some expensive items that I needed handled with care and specially wrapped and they did a great job wrapping them and making sure they arrived in great shape. I also had a scared cat that wouldn't come down from the cabinets and they assisted me with retrieving him! Thanks! I would highly recommend this company for moving as they are affordable, respectful, flexible and trustworthy. I will call them again for my next move! Thanks!!

My experience with University Movers could not have been better. They were flexible with their scheduling, showed up right on time, worked steadily and efficiently and were careful with everything that had to be moved. Nothing was harmed in the move and everything ended up in the correct locations throughout the house that was being moved into. Their pricing was very affordable (which was great since I was on a tight budget) and in comparison to other moving companies, you cannot find a better value for your money. I don't have a single complaint and would highly suggest using them for your future moving needs!

Needed cracks in the driveway repaired and after a conversation was told they are expanding into others areas of the business like pressure washing, painting, siding. Our conversation also included we were selling the house and moving out of state. Jeremiah reassured me they could do the work. I have since then left the state but my husband is there finishing details. We have had several dates with this contractor and the work is still not done. After reading the reviews, work is continuing on his end but I guess my job was minor and could be skipped and forgotten. I get that Wisconsin has had a lot of rain but the rain didn’t seem to stop other jobs. This tells me that this company will go beyond for big jobs but little jobs are not important. I did not like the fact that my texts and emails were not answered and from the reviews it happened to other people as well. Our initial work date was August 20, which he forgot he was suppose to be there. If you are going to be in business, then be a professional. Customer service is very important to me. I heard from him a couple of times but how long did he really expect us to wait? It just makes me wonder did he really have all the materials to perform my job? How do you pick up materials and never go to the site?? Don’t waste your time with this contractor because he sure wasted mine.

Thank you!! Mike and Peter did an amazing job with moving the contents of a POD storage unit to my basement. They tackled a couple of challenging situations with creativity and achieved great results. They were hard workers and left the job complete. I will most certainly consider you for future projects.

Mathew and his brother did great a great job on the painting projects I needed done at my house! The thing I liked best is how focused they were on the quality of work that they did. Too many times, contractors rush through projects so they can move onto the next one. Not these guys. They took their time and made sure everything was up to their extremely high standards. I couldn't be happier with the results! I wouldn't hesitate to use them again on various other projects around my house or recommend them to a friend.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

    • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
    • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
    • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
    • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
    • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
