Before I hired Weston I spent time to go see his work, let me just say; he is one of the best designers in this area and maybe in this country. I love what he did to my home, no one designs like him, and his design process is extraordinary – Wow! Is all I can think to say -- there is nothing like what he does even on the internet. Jane V.

Caryn is perfect! My parents worked with an interior designer when I was growing up, and I remember she would always push really fancy expensive furniture on them, so I was hesitant to hire someone when we bought our new home. Caryn understands that we are DIY people, and works with that, and our budget, in mind. She doesn't overcharge, and we got SO much done in our one-hour consult with her. She picked out paint colors for the whole house and I LOVE them. I would have spend hours agonizing over it had I picked them out myself. Worth every penny! I can't wait to use her over the years to design our home!

It was a pleasure to work with Jerrica on my recent guest bathroom remodel. The bath was outdated and not at all how I wanted my guests to view my home. I just had no clue on what to do with it. I didn't even really know what my style was exactly. I just knew what I didn't like. The bath needed new flooring, wall treatment, vanity, fixtures and shower tile. I enlisted Jerrica to design the room and from the beginning of the project, Jerrica was able to tune into my ideal aesthetic and make me comfortable with the design process. As a first-time customer of an interior designer, this was very important to me! Jerrica provided a 3D rendering of what my bathroom would look like. I was amazed at the transformation from outdated bath to luxurious spa! She worked within our budget to create an inspired space. She has a very keen sense of color. She had ideas that I would never have thought of doing. I am so happy (and proud) with the way the room looks now. I want to my own master bath now. I cannot wait to work with her again.

Nicole was amazing! Wonderful with the children who ranged from 1 year to 10 years old. She stayed a few minutes over our agreed time to make sure she got to each child. And they all loved their designs!

I own a Home Improvement Company and I have hired William frequently in the past 2 years for design work as well as securing new customers for my business. My experience shows me that Bill is very thorough, really has an eye for the details and takes great pride in his work. His customer service skills are outstanding and I will look forward to working with him in the future.

I cannot tell you enough good things about Joan Suzio. I interview several decorators to help me transform my house into a guy's place after having been divorced. Joan really listened and took A LOT of notes. She had a really good method which help me think about things in steps instead of getting overwhelmed. Joan is very considerate about the budget and has given me plenty of options. We worked on the Family Room/Kitchen, Living Room, Master Bedroom, and touched on Office, Hall Bathroom. The best expression in these tech days is OMG. My place is looking terrific and am still in the process. Thank you Joan for all your help and being a blast to work with!

I'd love to recommend Magin to anyone who needs interior design work. Magin designed and sewed window treatments for me for an unusually large and too bright living room window. The result is classy and keeps the "airy" feeling in the room, just as I had wanted. Magin put me at ease so I could ask all the Qs I needed to. She has a great eye for interesting and contemporary style. Magin's cost estimate was right on, too. So refreshing. What really helped me was doing lots of the prep work on computer because I have such a busy schedule. One last remark, Magin's fresh ideas for my project just delighted me!

Leave the entire project to Kelly, or pick and choose from the list below. Space Planning – Furniture plans are an absolute must before purchasing new furniture for your space. There are usually several different options for laying out furniture in a room. Determining the layout that works best for your lifestyle and selecting pieces with the proper scale is essential. These plans will help you avoid costly mistakes. Furniture – Kelly Brasch Interiors has access to countless furniture brands at several different price points. Whether you’re interested in higher end furnishings that are only available through designers or more moderately priced brands you might find at a retail store, Kelly will select furniture, fabrics, and finishes to suit your style and your budget. Fabrics and finishes can be viewed in your home to ensure they coordinate with items you already own. Window Treatments – Kelly designs window treatments with décor, light control, and privacy considerations in mind. They may consist of custom draperies, decorative hardware, top treatments, blinds, window shades, or a combination of these items. Kelly works with expert installers and experienced workrooms to produce your custom window designs. If custom treatments aren’t in your budget, she will shop for store-bought window treatments and drapery hardware. Carpeting, Flooring, and Area Rugs – If you’re considering carpet, tile, wood, stone, slate, bamboo, or cork flooring, Kelly will source the perfect solution for your space. Add that extra layer and warm up your space with an area rug expertly selected to beautifully complement your room. Lighting – A well-thought-out lighting plan allows you to change the atmosphere of a room. Sometimes, you want a well-lit room and other times, you want a more ambient feel. Kelly will recommend a combination of chandeliers, pendants, sconces, lamps, recessed and track lighting, and dimmers. The result will be beautiful from a design standpoint and practical to support the many functions of your space. Accessories – Accessories are the jewelry of a room, and Kelly will shop for accessories to give your space that final touch. Sourcing accessories from designer showrooms, specialty boutiques, retail shops, and discount stores, your budget will determine where the majority of accessories will be purchased from. Materials and Finishes Selection – Selecting that perfect furniture fabric, cabinet finish, countertop, tile backsplash, wood floor, or carpet can be a daunting task. Kelly will help you with these selections, ensuring everything works beautifully together. Wall Coverings and Decorative Paint Finishes – With access to a wide array of designer wall coverings and skilled decorative painters, Kelly will recommend just the right treatment for your space. Paint Color Consultations – Choosing a paint color on your own can be overwhelming. With Kelly’s eye for color, you can be confident that you’ll get it right the first time. Renewed furniture and accessory placement will bring a room from drab to fab!

    About

Robin Gonzalez Pena Design was established as my response to the dichotomy I witnessed upon my arrival to Central Florida two years ago. In a time and place where new development was abundant, innovative design firms seeking to explore new heights were lacking. I saw a need for a full service design firm - one that came on board while the house was still a dream and ideas were yet on paper. One that would transform a client's space into something unique and spectacular.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

    • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
    • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
    • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
    • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

    • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
    • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
    • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
    • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
