I hired Tony originally to do interior painting in the upstairs for a house I am selling. It was a rental and was in rough shape. Tony went above and beyond in helping me prep it to sell. I also live in a difference state and he was more than accommodating for my situation. In addition to painting (which was fantastic!), he also did landscaping such as lawn mowing, weed whacking, trimming of bushes, and gutter cleaning. He also got me the right tools for a dehumidifier I had running improperly and was able to take care of some other minor things in the home that made a BIG difference. The first showing I had after he finished his work, I got a full price offer. I had 8 showings before that and no offers. I have one more rental I plan to sell in the next year or two, and I will not be considering anyone else.

Jamie and his crew did a great job painting the interior of our home. Jamie came up with some creative design ideas with the color palate we chose especially as it was a large open concept floor plan. Would definitely hire again.

FENCE AND EXTERIOR PAINTING Awesome job! Hired Steamatic to install a 250 ft wood fence and dog enclosure. Bo gave me the best price and we picked out the materials for the fence and dog run together. Everything was delivered to our house in 10 days. (The crew even came out after delivery to put the supplies in the garage because of rain) The fence was up in a week and the dog run soon after that. We are very pleased with the workmanship of the crew and Bo was overseeing the project on a daily basis. With that said I asked if they did house painting. We picked out a house color in a darker shade then the fence with the trim the same color as the fence. Again everything was great and the curb appeal quite attractive. I highly recommend Steamatic and would use them in future home improvement projects. Cliff A

I have used MJI services regularly for the past three years and they are always on time, reliable and thorough. They provide cleaning and painting services in the apartment buildings that I manage and always do a great job. They work fast and leave apartments looking brand new. If there is ever something that is missed or that needs another coat, MJI is happy to return promptly and take care of it. They always make sure the customer is happy with the final product. They are a great company to use!

My stepmother was putting her house up for sale and needed some interior painting done. I was referred to Amazing Finishes through a friend and gave a call. My stepmother was given a very honest assessment. Hired them and was very pleased with the finished product. The attention to detail and cleanliness was exceptional. A+ experience.

Needed cracks in the driveway repaired and after a conversation was told they are expanding into others areas of the business like pressure washing, painting, siding. Our conversation also included we were selling the house and moving out of state. Jeremiah reassured me they could do the work. I have since then left the state but my husband is there finishing details. We have had several dates with this contractor and the work is still not done. After reading the reviews, work is continuing on his end but I guess my job was minor and could be skipped and forgotten. I get that Wisconsin has had a lot of rain but the rain didn’t seem to stop other jobs. This tells me that this company will go beyond for big jobs but little jobs are not important. I did not like the fact that my texts and emails were not answered and from the reviews it happened to other people as well. Our initial work date was August 20, which he forgot he was suppose to be there. If you are going to be in business, then be a professional. Customer service is very important to me. I heard from him a couple of times but how long did he really expect us to wait? It just makes me wonder did he really have all the materials to perform my job? How do you pick up materials and never go to the site?? Don’t waste your time with this contractor because he sure wasted mine.

I had Jason come out to do a couple rooms worth for painting and trim work. He's good! It was like he was never here; he's very clean and tidy as he goes about his work. He's quick too, he was able to knock this out in a day after we decided on the paint and trim (color and styles). I would recommend Jason to anyone who needs a few odd jobs done that can't necessarily afford a contractor or "professional" in the field.

Our experience with Scott was great--he gave us a reasonable quote within a couple hours of looking at the deck, responded promptly to all of our messages, and did a thorough job of painting our deck, especially on the tricky latticework. We asked him to buy the paint, and he didn't charge extra when he needed to buy more than he had anticipated in his quote. Our deck looks fresh and new and we have Scott to thank for it!

I have been using Heureux Design for my decorating and painting needs for over 10 years. Jessalyn has completed three extensive projects for me, as well as several smaller projects. She even makes custom furniture! If I have a design or painting need, I just call Heureux! They are all so talented and knowledgeable and make the process so easy. Jessalyn is an incredible designer and I would recommend her and Heureux Design to anyone in need of their many talents.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do painters cost?

The national average cost for an interior painter ranges between $450 and $900. Interior painters can tackle everything from complete color makeovers in each of your rooms to touching up an accent wall to painting pieces of furniture. The square footage and complexity of the project, along with the materials needed, are the main factors that will affect cost. Other factors include whether you supply the paint yourself or want the painter to do so, whether you move the furniture and do the prep work or ask them to do it, and whether any repair work is needed on the walls. Painting the ceiling and the trim will also have an effect on cost. The type of paint you choose can also raise or lower your house painting cost. A gallon of paint may range from $20 to over $100, depending on quality and brand. Ask your painter if they charge per hour or per square foot, and how much you can save by doing prep work (moving furniture, etc.) yourself.

How much does it cost to paint the interior of a house?

Interior house painting costs are calculated on a few key factors. Nationally, interior house painting projects range from $200 to $2,500. The wide price range indicates how much square footage, paint selection and labor can affect cost. One pro uses a laser to measure each room, subtracting the size of the doors and windows, and then bases the quote on the square footage of the actual surfaces to be painted. Painters may provide you with savings if you opt to paint your entire home rather than just having one room or an accent wall painted. For example, the average house painting cost for an 8x12 room with 8-foot ceilings is roughly $200, when contractor-grade paint is used. Painting ceilings, baseboards and frames can also affect cost. Pros may charge per linear foot to smooth and paint baseboards. In one area pros might charge 50 cents per linear foot to paint baseboards, while pros in another part of the country could charge $1.50 per linear foot for the same task. Painters may charge flat rates for painting door and window frames, with one charging $20-$25 and another $60 per door. Geography and regional costs to do business play a major role in the cost of interior painting. The same painter in a rural region has less to pay in taxes, transportation, insurance and overhead than they would in a major city like New York.

How much does a painter charge per room?

The cost to paint a room will vary based on the size of the room, the type of paint you select, any ceiling or trim work needed, and any repairs needed. If no repairs or other additional work is needed, painting a room with contractor-grade paint could range from $1 to $2 per square foot, including materials. Selecting a luxury paint (some cost more than $100 per gallon) will certainly increase your house painting costs. Here are some additional examples of average house painting costs, per room:

  • 12x12 room with a 9-foot ceiling: about $125
  • 12x12 room with an 8-foot ceiling: about $100
  • 14x16 master bedroom with a 9-foot ceiling: about $150
  • 14x16 master bedroom with an 8-foot ceiling: about $125
  • 16x16 living room with a 9-foot ceiling: about $175
  • 16x16 living room with a 20-foot ceiling: starting at $225
