This was initial contact with and acquisition of services through Thumbtack. I was seeking a service to complete a post-move deep-cleaning of my home in preparation for its listing. I was singularly responsible for preparing my 3-bedroom home for the move; admittedly and regrettably, my home was not free of all its household goods and my personal miscellaneous. I received 4 quotes from Thumbtack. There was some disparity in quoted prices so I relied heavily on the provided reviews and the communication I received from the service providers. I posted my request late evening and received a prompt response from Kim of "You've Got Maids." Without question, Kim's quote provided me a comprehensive understanding of the services that would be provided. Subsequent emails from Kim illuminated her consumer-focused attention. The quote I received from Kim's service was the highest quote received; however, I was confident that the amount was commensurate with the quality of service. My timeline for service was tight and I was inflexible with the day I required service; "You've Got Maids" met my requirements. Kim assured me that the "girls" would provide me the services as agreed and would be open/flexible to other cleaning and/or organizing needed within the time frame of service. Kim's quote reflected two cleaner professionals; however, three professionals arrived my home promptly the day/time of service. I was mortified at the condition of my home as I felt I had not prepared it sufficiently for it to be cleaned. Toni, Courtney, and Crystal approached the enormity of tasks with professionalism and good humor. Each professional courteously accepted my myriad directives. They reflected a sense of "team" that made expedient organization out of my chaos. As each space was fully emptied, the three professionals maintained a steady pace and eye-to-detail to my home's deep-cleaning. I was ecstatic with the results; moreover, the demeanor of Kim, Toni, Courtney, and Crystal extended to me a level of compassion which made this process of my move effortless. I am sincerely grateful for their service and highly recommend anyone considering a comparable service to quickly discount other quotes and contract with "You've Got Maids."

Eddie showed up on time and we ran into a little problem with the type of wall mount that I had bought. He still managed to mount my Tv with no issue. He was very nice despite all the commotion in my household. Would recommend anyone to him. Quality work at a great price.

Walt with WB was wonderful! I needed a fence built at a new home in short order to keep some dogs contained. Walt got out the next week to get the job done. Even working alone, he fenced in the yard with shadow box fencing within 3.5 days. He pulled all permits and even made sure to call the permitting office later on one the final day to ensure someone had gotten out to sign off on the job. Would definitely recommend WB for fencing or any other household need.

We hired Paloma for housecleaning. So impressed, we will definitely hire her again, for this and possibly other household help in the future (pet sitting or domestic projects). She is professional, friendly and an excellent communicator from initial hiring to the completion of the work. She came prepared for the work, asked questions and was so helpful. Thank you, Paloma!

Marisela and her team did an outstanding job of cleaning our house and preparing it for selling. Marisela was responsive from the outset. She is easy to deal with, very committed, communicates clearly and was responsive to our needs. She was willing to travel to our home without complaints. I will use Marisela's services again, and we would not hesitate in recommending her to anyone.

My family was very satisfied with the simulated wood ceramic tiling that were installed. The craftsmanship with which the floors were designed and executed was beautiful. The price was really fair and I recommend Benitez for your household construction needs.

Just used RG service again for a deep cleaning of our house to get ready for sale and Retta and her niece knocked it out of the park. They cleaned everything from the walls, windows, blinds, kitchen, bath.. it is sparkling. If I was in the business of house flipping or property management, I would use them again in a heart beat. I know this review is a gushing review, but we have used other house cleaners and they exceeded them on deep cleaning / sanitizing. Thanks for all the great work on our former home in Milwaukee.

I'm so happy that I found this handyman. As soon as I opened the door, I knew I liked him. He's personable and someone I felt I could trust. I'm also pleased with the work he did. So far, I've had him over for some household issues like fixing a toilet, setting up a bed frame, and mounting a headboard among other things. He was efficient with all. I'm having him back real soon to help with a bunch of things around the house that I should have done ages ago. His price is real good for a handyman so I'm able to have him back more often. I highly recommend him!

I hired Kenya a few years ago after my former housekeeper had to quit with little notice (but for justifiable reasons). I interviewed several new applicants, and was most impressed with Kenya. She arrived on time for the interview, and presented me with a two page list of the steps she regularly takes when cleaning homes. I found her rates to be comparable to other cleaning services in the area. In the several years that Kenya has cleaned my home, I have never had any reason to complain. She is prompt in arriving, and does a fabulous job. She has rarely had to cancel, and then only for completely understandable and justifiable reasons. She is also flexible with my schedule when I need to cancel or reschedule, and she always takes my calls when I need to leave her detailed instructions. She is trustworthy, conscientious, and very personable. She is also absolutely wonderful with my pets (1 dog, 2 cats, a fish tank, and a hamster), and with my 4 year old child (and the clutter that is inherent in a household with pets and small children). I highly recommend Kenya.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is house sitting?

A house sitter watches your house while you are away for work or vacation, or if you have to be away for an extended period. House sitters can also provide pet-sitting services, staying in your home and caring for your pet while you are away. The house sitter can say overnight in your home while you’re gone, or stop by once a day to ensure everything is in order if your pet doesn’t need overnight supervision. Reptiles and most cats are just fine with daily visits and feeding.

House sitting provides major advantages to the homeowner. A regular presence in your house deters break-ins and theft. Home safety issues such as water leaks get noticed and dealt with right away, so you don’t come home to big problems. A house sitter can bring in your mail daily, care for your houseplants, and provide home safety and peace of mind.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How much do you pay for house cleaning?

Hiring a professional house cleaning service is a helpful way to have a healthy home even when your work and personal schedule is packed. House cleaning prices vary based on how many square feet your home is, how dirty your house gets, and how often the cleaning service comes. Some companies charge a set amount — such as 5 cents — per square foot, with a minimum amount, such as $100. The national average cost for house cleaning ranges between $110 and $150. Prices can be lower in areas with a lower cost of living, higher in big cities or affluent regions. You may save money by increasing the frequency of your house cleaning visits. Often a company will charge you less per cleaning when you schedule more cleanings per month. The cost advantage rewards your loyalty, and also reflects the fact that more frequent cleanings make it easier to maintain a high level of cleanliness in your home. A housecleaning service may charge more for the first visit or for one-time services than for recurring cleanings.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor.
