JL was the first movers to respond to my Thumbtack inquiry so to me that meant they're on top of their business and they are in fact just that. A quick and efficient representive went over every detail with me, she listened to my concerns and it was scheduled. Movers and truck showed up on time. They were respectful, polite and packed everything the in truck with great care. She even called 2 hours into it to see how it was going which I appreciated. After experiencing numerous 5 star rated moving companies due to our nomadic lifestyle over the years, we STRONGLY recommend JL. We're hopeful we never have to move again, but if we do its good to know JL is there. Last but not least let me point out to those who are moving....it's also up to you for a smoother move too. Pack your stuff in CLOSED boxes and label which room they go in. That way the guys can stack the boxes in the truck and when they unload (and they do it fast) they'll know where to put everything. You'd be surprised how many don't do that and then complain about a slower move. Anyway....USE JL! You will be glad you did.

Hugo and his Landscaping Image LLC team did a fabulous job with our project. We had them replace the existing sod in our front lawn and terrace. The job included several complicated cuts around existing flower beds and landscaped plots. Several things stood out from our experience. (1) He is the only contractor who gave us price estimates per square foot as part of his very first response to our inquiry. Very nice touch. (2) He was the first contractor on Thumbtack to respond - and made arrangements to come to our house the very next day to view the job. (3) He provided meticulous details about how he and his team would do the job - including how the old soil and roots would be removed and fresh topsoil added before the new sod was installed. (4) He said the new Kentucky Bluegrass sod company he now uses for his jobs is free of weeds and pests, which was occasionally a problem with the previous companies he worked with. (5) He and his team started the job the very next day - and completed everything in two days. (6) Throughout the project, Hugo kept in communication with us via text message which was very much appreciated. The quality of the work is excellent and we are very happy with the results. Several of our neighbors stopped by as they were finishing the project, commenting on the beautiful color of the new sod and the quality of the work. Two asked us for the name of the company. The only suggestion we might have for Hugo and his team would be to clean up at the end of each work day. They did this very well on the last day, but things were quite messy at the end of the first day after they left. While this is certainly understandable, it just would have been nice for them to tidy up before leaving each day. Overall, however, this was a 10/10 experience for us. We would highly recommend Hugo and his team to anyone looking for sod replacement services.

Hiring the guys from Hungry Man Moving was the best part of our move. They were so professional and considerate with their interactions with us which made us comfortable and trusting for them to move our old home to our new home. They were very efficient and careful with all our stuff, not to mention their prices are much more affordable than the other moving companies we looked into. We highly recommend them for your moving needs, and will use them again if we ever move to another new home! -Jason and Kim

These guys are the BEST!! Wilson was the most kind, gracious man I've ever worked with for a move. He and his men did an excellent job, were very knowledgeable, courteous, detailed, professional, fair, very efficient and extremely hard working. From start to finish they did a top notch job! I was apprehensive because we've had some bad moving experiences, but this went smoother, and more professional than I had hoped. Wilson was nothing less than a sweet, calming presence, and worked incredibly hard for us. I'd hire these guys again in a minute. No need to go with the big companies that rush and don't care about your stuff. These people are the best you can hire. I'd give 10 stars if I could!

Corporate relo here... as many of you know, moving every few years becomes a way of life. That doesn't make it any easier! Do yourself a favor... hire Joal. Here's why: 1) a 4200 sq ft house completely staged and organized... zero boxes left to unpack, zero paintings still hanging around to decide where to place, zero boxes of items hanging around to go to donation center...in 3 days! Literally, the moving van showed up on Tuesday and I'm relaxing having coffee in my completely done house Friday morning. 2) joal was extremely flexible. I wasn't sure how much time I needed her help for and she explained it was better to book extra time than not enough. She worked with me for 3 half days and we completed ahead of schedule and she cancelled the fourth day with no issues. Oh, and I called and asked if she could come a day early and she was able to arrange for it! She's also flexible in the sense that she can take over organizing or take your lead. I didn't care how my kitchen was set up, but very picky how my master closet was set up. She shines in both situations! 3) she was very soothing in a time of great stress. I get overwhelmed by the sheer enormity of all that needs to be done during a move. It's stressful. She kept me focused, helped me think through a couple of key decisions quickly and having a few rooms done right off the bat helped ease the anxiety. 4) joal not only organizes, she can help stage your house too! I have a lot of unusual display pieces and she helped arrange them artfully so that the house is functional AND beautiful! 5) she gets rid of your donations for you. At the end of each day she takes everything you've sorted out and brings you a receipt the next day. 6) she's great with animals. We have two big dogs and a cat and they didn't have to stay caged up the entire time. A huge bonus for us! Ps... ask her about her Sadie! 7) my teenage daughter loved her. She was given a budget to decorate but joal gave her some great ideas of how to decorate and make the most of her money. Made a tough move a little exciting for her! 8) she was available in a reasonable amount of time. I called on 12/22 and she was able to schedule me for 4 half days starting 12/27. I'd highly recommend going the half day route. Trust me, you are exhausted and there comes a point of diminishing returns. It also gave me a little time to think through what I wanted her help on every day. 9) rates were very reasonable. Seriously, just budget it in. You won't be sorry!

Dan arrived promptly at the time agreed upon for him to start the job.. He had all the tools he needed for the job, except some electrical tape, which he went off the clock to obtain. I was having an old bath exhaust fan removed, and a new larger one installed. Dan ran into a few hard spots in the installation, but he quickly figured them out, and the new fan is installed and running smoothly. Dan also did the electrical hookup of the existing wiring and was very proficient at it. Dan was very professional throughout the installation, and I would definitely hire him again if I had a project that he felt he could work on. His hourly rate was reasonable, and he kept track of his time on his smart phone, so there was no doubt of the exact time he worked on the project.

Steve helped me move heavier items from the U-Haul which I transported from my old home in New York to my new one in Wisconsin. Steve was incredibly helpful, kind, and friendly. His estimate and charge were both incredibly reasonable, and he gave me the best price for what I was looking for. I would recommend him highly to anyone looking for help moving, either with help transporting items, loading items, unloading items, or even all three. He offers the best value for the price, better than even the 'professional' movers around the area.

Wonderful and professional service and a real pleasure to deal with. They were incredibly flexible with changing plans to accommodate the craziness that comes with moving. They were happy to move all my heavy furniture to the top floor of my apartment building. I would 100% recommend their services to anyone.

I highly recommend this efficient, friendly, organized and professional company for your next move. I contacted them when I was moving from the east coast to Wisconsin with a 17' van with the contents of my home there. It had taken a crew of seven 4 hours to load my van in NJ, their crew of two took a little over 2 hours to unload AND set up my bed and furnishings. They had stairs to navigate both up and down and I watched in awe how quickly they got me set up and comfortable. I had several stuffed 4-drawer file cabinets, some heavy electronic equipment, the king sized bed and mattresses, bookcases and boxes and boxes of books for them as well as close to 50 large plastic tubs with fragile art and family treasures that made it whole and unbroken in the move. VERY satisfied and would use them again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
