Interaction and UI designer

Want to make your mark as a designer? This is your spot. We feel like we have yet to hit v1 of our product. If you think our website is already beautiful, we don't want you. We want someone who sees a thousand flaws and can imagine how much better our design and user experience can be.

You'll work directly with product engineers and our business team to conceptualize, design, and prototype new products and features.

Specific requirements

  • Strong portfolio with examples of self-started projects
  • Exceptional visual talent that explains ideas with sketches and wireframes
  • Communication skills that can deftly articulate your decisions
  • Real curiosity for user experience and crafting products that delight
  • We hire talent, not pedigree or years of experience

Bonus points

  • Ability to prototype and build what you design
  • Knowledge of PHP, Python, or other scripting languages
  • Mobile design/development experience
  • Active in the design community

Software engineer

We are looking for great people to join our engineering team to make real products that hundreds of thousands of people use every month. Our engineering blog has more details about the work we do.

Some interesting problems we've tackled at Thumbtack:

Powerful event tracking, reporting, and experiment framework.

We track and test everything, and needed a tool to log, aggregate, and analyze all that data. We built a tracking powerhouse whose crowning feature is an experimentation framework with beautiful statistics and visualizations that instantly tell us how code changes are affecting metrics across the board.

Dynamic web crawling.

We built a fast, distributed crawler with custom data processing. It quickly scales up or down depending on our needs and the cost of machine time.

Elegant peer-to-peer payments.

We're making a true marketplace where buyers and sellers transact through our trusted payments. Building a fresh, engaging user experience is as important as protecting data security and integrity.

Requirements

We have no specific requirements, other than this: you must be a great problem solver who understands modern web technology and has a passion for great code.

Bonus points

  • Experience with a scripting language, and the ability to pick up similar languages quickly (we use Python and PHP)
  • Battle-tested knowledge of Javascript, CSS, and modern web browsers
  • An understanding of relational and NoSQL databases (we use Postgres and Mongo)
  • Mobile web or application experience

We strongly encourage you to complete one of our programming challenges and submit your solution with your resume.

You will own Thumbtack's online and offline marketing, whether that's weekly newsletters, pitches to journalists, radio buys, an elite club of Thumbtack's power users, or something else.

Specific requirements

  • Basic design experience - you will be overseeing the basic design and distribution of our weekly newsletters to 500,000 Thumbtack members
