A Calling for Teaching
The first part of Larry's education was the experience he got from working with tremendous professional guitarists who attended his dad's weekly jam sessions. Many people inspired him to teach music -- including his dad, who was a well-known guitarist in the '60s to '70s.
He was also inspired by his jazz school band teacher and Chet Atkins. But more importantly, he felt that he had a divine calling to share his gift of music to others, and this propelled his teaching business.
I have found that the best way to keep a student, is to keep them motivated and engaged by tailoring each student's curriculum to what most motivates them, plus at the same time infusing the skills and knowledge that would be most beneficial for them to help them fulfill the skills they desire.
I use a lot of humor in teaching. If people are having fun, they're more open to learning.
Larry was challenged to maintain his student base before but made his way through and now has about 90 students in Funky Munky Music. His recent success story was a student who had problems with sight reading and chord forming, but with his help and the student's band teacher, that student is now more confident.
I view each student as equally important as any other student, and love to see each one of them grow into progressively more confident players! Many of my students have become very outstanding musicians.
