Introduction

With 15 years of experience teaching art and design courses at the college level, I have a wide variety of knowledge and skills to share with a student. Based on goals that are determined in our first meeting, I'll create lessons (with measurable results) that will lead to achieving them. We'll then work together until the student determines that he or she is satisfied with the skills and knowledge they have acquired and are happy with the art that has been (and will be) created. My goal is to provide the best instruction possible and to ensure that each student has achieved the results that he/she was looking for. I'm not satisfied with any less than that. The "work" that I do? I guess you can call it that - how does the saying go? "Find work that you enjoy doing and you'll never work a day in your life?" Teaching is that for me - there is nothing that I do not enjoy about it (yes, that even includes evaluating/grading it). Working with individuals to expand his or her knowledge or skills is a dream come true. There is nothing more rewarding to me then to witness personal growth in another person - and the process of achieving that in turn helps me grow too. Life is too short not to explore one's creativity, and I thoroughly enjoy being the guide for the trip!

Mr. D alway went above and beyond to help us understand design fundamentals,color theory, and the many programs we had to master in order to become the designers and 3D artist we are today. I myself use a lot of skills i learned from Mr. D everyday, from digital painting right down to photo editing. I am glad and honored to have had a professor so involved in our passion and art. Mr. D will go on to inspire great artist for years to come.

Patrick was, and, to this day still is, the greatest art instructor I have ever had. And his knowledge, wisdom, and professionalism go beyond the realm of art; He guides you and teaches you on how to not only become a better artist, but a better person. And that in order to excel in any passion - art or otherwise - you must expand and grow who you are as a person, as a soul. As a human being. That's when you'll understand the full value of his teachings, and how they apply in everything you do in life. He is, by far, the most valuable asset to anywhere he works.

Of all my art teachers over the years, Patrick Despres is one of my favorites. He's a teacher first, not an art snob like the other art professors out there. While other teachers will only show how do draw or paint just like they do, Mr. Despres identifies an individual students strengths and builds on them. His passion for teaching shows and creates passion for art in his students. I highly recommend him as am art instructor.

Instructor in the arts. Great teacher, really knew the concepts well and more importantly how to put them to use. See for me there are generally two types of instrutors, those who teach by the books and those that teach by doing. Finding someone who falls into a sweet spot in the middle is pretty rare, and Despres falls into that!

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
Pricing is tricky - if I could instruct for free, believe me, I would! I like to keep the price as low and reasonable as possible, but I have to factor in "hidden" costs such as self-employment taxes, travel costs, insurance,etc. Whatever we agree on, I'll provide the best instruction possible. I guarantee that you'll never be disappointed!
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
When working with a new customer, I first ask what they are interested in learning or improving. If any previous artwork is available for viewing, we'll take a look at it and talk about it. After that we can consider his/her goals, such as whether its purely for enjoyment, if they are exploring a career path or creating art to sell. Finally we'll figure out an approach to achieving those goals and I'll create lessons (complete with self-directed assignments!) that will be presented each time we meet.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I've earned a Bachelor of Fine Art in Art Education from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and a Master of Fine Arts from Washington State University in Sculpture (minor in drawing). I've taught classes at two career-oriented colleges for 15 years and taught at a community art center for 3 years.
