Karl R. says, "During 2022, we worked with PureReno on two outdoor projects (a main project and one smaller, related project). We received a referral from a large general contractor that worked on bigger budget renovations and construction, and feel fortunate to have connected with him. In a nutshell, we had a very positive experience with PureReno and owner Edward Austin, and we enthusiastically recommend them. In greater detail... The main project was a porch addition to our somewhat-historic house in downtown Boone, NC. We communicated ideas we've basically been dreaming about for a decade and shared old photos from the 1920s and 1930s. He made a plans based on our ideas, and shared it with us and later the planning & inspections dept. We accepted a quote we thought was very competitive, and in hindsight we feel strongly that we did get a good deal. We think the money was well-spent, and we liked supporting a local young person that was building a small business. We predictably had a couple new requests along the way, and he worked to incorporate our new requests. The porch is a dream come true for us and really surpassed our expectations. Materials weren't particularly cheap during the time of our project, but Edward was transparent about them. There was very little waste, and I kept some odds and ends for future projects. Although many would consider Edward a new business owner, he had considerable experience and has contacts in construction and landscaping from previous jobs, and it showed in the quality of the work. Edward has a perfectionist streak, and the quality was impressive to us, our neighbors and the town inspectors. If anything, it is overbuilt. We were also impressed with Edward's work ethic. Some aspects of the two projects required some challenging manual labor for long hours. For example, he hand-dug deep footer holes that were immediately next to our old house...it was tough work in summer heat. Numerous stumps had to be ground, and soil from a berm removed."See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to get the outside of your house painted?

You can expect to pay around $2,535 to get the outside of your house painted, though this cost will increase with larger house sizes (and decrease with smaller ones). The average hourly rate for exterior painters is $45 and ranges from $25-$75.

Wood, brick, stucco, vinyl, aluminum and stone each have their own set of demands. Contact exterior painters near you to get a detailed cost estimate for your house.

How many coats of paint does the exterior of a house need?

Your house’s exterior will likely need two coats of paint. With two coats, your house will look more even and solid in color and will be better protected from moisture and the elements. The painting should always occur over a primed and well-prepared surface.

What colors should I paint my house exterior?

You have many options when it comes to paint colors. For example, an off-white creates a traditional look, and it looks great with a bright door to contrast it. Yellow is a happy color that, while light blue is reminiscent of an oceanfront style. Gray houses are also on trend, providing a classy and neutral tone that remains warm and inviting.

How often should you paint your house's exterior?

Expert opinion is mixed, but the general range is five to 10 years. However, this depends on many factors. Houses in harsh climates with extreme temperatures, lots of dust or ice or intense sunlight may need more frequent paint jobs than those in temperate climates. Also, wood houses will need new paint more often due to the changes within the wood itself. You should also consider painting the outside of your house if you plan to sell it.

What is the best exterior house paint?

Acrylic paints are generally considered good options for today’s home exterior paint jobs. You can also choose an oil-based or latex (water-based) paint. Also, look into specialty paints for your doors, roof, gutters, siding and other exterior surfaces.

What should I look for when choosing a painter?

When choosing a painter, pay attention to online reviews and ratings. Reviews with pictures are especially valuable, as these showcase the painter’s work. It’s also important to check whether your state requires licenses for painters — if it’s required, your contractor should be able to present their license.

Finally, compare estimates and quotes from multiple painters near you. Take into consideration what each one guarantees with the job, including factors like higher-quality paint, extensive preparation and a good warranty.

Should I pressure wash my house before painting?

Pressure washing your siding before painting is an efficient way to clean your house in preparation for receiving new paint. However, it must be done correctly to avoid causing water damage or damaging the siding itself.

Depending on the PSI rating of your washer, you should stand far away enough from your house to avoid removing paint or etching into the siding itself. Also avoid injecting water behind the siding, which typically occurs when spraying upwards at a low angle.

When in doubt, consider hiring a pressure washer near you before your painter paints your home’s exterior. Or, contact the best painters near you to see if they offer pressure washing services as well.

What questions should I ask an exterior painter?

While painters’ online profiles provide helpful customer reviews and other information, it’s still important to ask the right questions. Ask whether they have sufficient workman’s compensation insurance to cover any injuries to avoid any potential financial liability. Get in writing the preparatory steps the painter takes to get the house ready for painting — simply painting on top of compromised paint won’t work. And does the work include a warranty? If the paint starts to fade, peel or crack soon after completion, you’ll want recourse.

What should I expect from a painting contractor?

You should expect an estimate based on an actual examination of the house, as well as a plan for exactly what the painter will do. During the job, the painters should behave professionally while working as efficiently as possible to complete the job in a reasonable timeframe. Afterward, the only evidence of the paint job should be the paint itself — a professional contractor will clean up thoroughly once a job is done.

How long does it take to paint a home’s exterior?

Painting a house exterior generally takes three to five days. The first day consists of cleaning away dirt, dust, loose paint, pollen, mildew and other surface contaminants. This must dry completely. The second day — and it could be more than just a day, depending on the condition of the house — is for preparation like stripping, sanding and priming. The next two to three days are for painting.
