Now offering piano lessons for beginners.

The piano is the "Rosetta Stone" of musical instruments. Piano instruction offers both the skill of playing the instrument, as well as a comprehensive understanding of music theory and practice. The same musical language may be applied to most of the instruments around the world.

Many musicians who learned the piano have, in turn, picked up on other instruments with ease, and they even compose their own music. Musical training teaches multitasking, coordination of mind and body, and appreciation of music that is unattainable otherwise.

Music helps people discover abilities they didn't realize they possessed. One learns the process of learning itself: how to examine problems and how to work toward solutions. It helps with emotional balance, offering the ability to work out problems while you play. Learning to play music with others also teaches cooperation and compatibility.

When learning an instrument, One discovers music in new ways, the appreciation of great masterworks and may encourage new possibilities for the future. I highly recommend everyone to learn music, it brightens the mind and brings joy to the heart.

Kirk was introduced to my daughter 2 years ago (She is 9 now). She loves him, and she loves piano. He never misses an appointment, EVER!! He is patient but really expects things from her. He is a very very very good teacher. I would strongly recommend him for any piano instruction, adult or child.

Kirk has been my daughters piano teacher for almost a year now. I have one word that describes him....FANTASTIC!!! He is patient - offers lots of advice, talks about music history and he even offers to pick up her piano books for us. When we first started he helped us find the appropriate keyboard for learning piano and was very patient in the time it took us to buy one. Really - if you want an experienced teacher for yourself or your child - I really recommend him to the fullest! Karen - Newport News Va :)

This is Jarel and I am almost 8 years old. Kirk has been my piano teacher for 8 months and I like it that he's my teacher. I like that he always gives me homework so I can learn more stuff and he always marks the things I need to practice. He always does technique first and I also learn how to play fast songs and also fun songs. When my hand is in the wrong position, he stops me and shows me how to do it right. He introduces me to new and fun stuff that are hard but which helps me make my fingers strong. I really like Kirk as my piano teacher.

When we were looking for a piano teacher for our 7 y.o. son, we interviewed more than a couple of teachers and we were really impressed with how Kirk's interview went. We told him we wanted our son to learn different styles of piano playing including jazz; when he showed us how he teaches and plays jazz, my husband and I looked at each other agreeing on hiring Kirk right there.

Our son has worked with Kirk for just 8 months but he has progressed fast and really well. Kirk has a way with working and communicating with children; our son is shy and doesn't usually talk to new adults and teachers--he talked to Kirk the first time he had lessons with him. The way he teaches techniques really feed on our son's strengths and helps with his struggles.

We are so pleased with the service that we are getting from Kirk and plan to have our son take lessons from him as long as he needs to. I highly recommend Kirk McLaren because he is an excellent teacher, set apart from others that we have known and worked with.

Kirk is a great teacher. He is extremely patient, explains things very clearly, and really knows the piano and all kinds of music. His enthusuasm is infectious and inspires the student to try hard to improve his or her ability.

Question and answer

Q. What do you like most about your job?

A. When a student realizes he of she can play a piece they enjoy, that moment is my favorite part of my work.

Q. What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

A. How long will it take before I can play something I like?

It depends on how high your goals are and how much you decide to practice. Playing the piano is a combination between the eye, the head, the heart and the hands. The coarse work offers "easy to play" pieces at the beginning and progress well into music theory to provide a greater command of the keyboard. Practicing will draw all these together, but it takes time; I have seen people catch on within a very few months.
