When I was in college I bought a banjo on a whim because my college band wanted me to play it. Pretty soon I was picking nonstop. A year later we won our school’s battle of the bands and opened for Sugar Ray! I was on banjo.
I’m always trying to think like a student. As a teacher, I don’t want to offer something unless the student really values it. In addition to teaching private lessons on acoustic instruments, I’m starting to host beginner jam sessions and workshops on specific topics. You always need to think how the person you’re serving thinks.
One of my students told me in our lessons that she wanted to sing while playing but always got really nervous. I pleaded with her to try and, sure enough, she had an amazing voice. I told her, truthfully, how nervous I get when I perform and that it’s something we all work through as artists. I told her how crucial it is to believe your talent is valuable and unique. Now she’s singing and playing all the time and even looking to play at open mics!
Thumbtack is the best out there. The model is simple and effective – connecting people who need services with the people who provide them. Then Thumbtack gets out of your hair. Other businesses try to squeeze the dimes out of every transaction, and keep tabs on your business even after you and the client connect. Thumbtack sets up the intro and then lets the client and the pro do their own thing. Thumbtack is the only website I use to grow my student base.
