Story by Jason Creel
I’ve had too many jobs I didn’t enjoy. By 2007 I realized I needed a change and considered three vastly different career paths: joining the military, becoming a missionary, or starting a business. I chose business.
I’ve worked desk jobs before, but they were never was a good fit. I would rather be outside sweating in the heat than inside at a desk.
Since I was a kid I’ve loved being outside and always kept my own lawn beautiful. Starting a lawn care business allowed me to be in nature while doing work I’m good at. It just fit my personality.
By 2008 I was open for business. That first year had some ups and downs, but I landed some great customers, which kickstarted everything.
Running a lawn care business is hard work and requires a lot of responsibility. The average customer wants someone who’s dependable and can provide quality work. If you have that, you have happy customers.
I also enjoy marketing and the thrill of growing a business. My work is more than just mowing grass. There’s a great deal of knowledge involved when handling different types of grasses and weeds. I love having customers who really appreciate the skill and knowledge that a lawn care professional can offer.
I also enjoy the business side of my job, as well as the physical labor. Potential customers have so much choice when it comes to deciding on a lawn care company, which is why marketing is so important to my business. Here are a few tactics I’ve tried:
- Creating a nice-looking website which generates a lot of leads
- Hand-delivering professionally designed postcards
- Reaching customers through direct mail, social media and other online methods like Thumbtack
[Editor’s note: Jason made this fantastic video with tips on using Thumbtack. You should definitely check it out!]
More and more, I am seeing the value of a strong online presence to reach new customers. Thumbtack is a great and affordable way to generate leads for my business. As with other lead providers, it’s important to create a good profile by getting reviews. I’m also always prompt when replying to requests. Often it’s the” early bird who gets the worm”.
I love owning a business. Sure, it comes with challenges, but there’s great satisfaction to be had. Going to work is so much more enjoyable when you work for yourself.
