Since opening in 2014, the Thumbtack office just outside of Salt Lake City has employed 230+ talented Utahns, in roles from sourcers for technical recruiting to customer support specialists, content writers, and special projects teams. This week, Thumbtack cofounder Jonathan Swanson welcomed Utah governor Gary Herbert to the office to talk with employees about the 5,500 Utah-based professionals who are running their small businesses on Thumbtack.
Utah is one of the hottest markets on Thumbtack today. Customers in Utah completed roughly 28,000 jobs on Thumbtack in 2016, and the state boasts nearly 90,000 customers—over 51,000 in Salt Lake City alone. The majority of professionals hired to get these jobs done in Utah are doing so full time, and they earn an average annual income of $75,000.
Thumbtack was thrilled to tour Governor Herbert around the office and discuss policies that affect small businesses.
The governor’s visit was also welcome reminder of what drew us to Utah three years ago: its warm and welcoming culture, talented people and a shared vision of success for small business entrepreneurs like the ones we support at Thumbtack.
A Thumbtack Employee Q&A
Thumbtack employees had a chance to ask the governor about Utah’s thriving outdoor recreation industry, the state’s diversity and inclusion policies (he pointed to Utah’s ranking as one of the most welcoming states in the country) and his stance on equal pay, a principle that Governor Herbert called “impossible to argue with.”
We also learned an unexpected fact about Utah’s top ranking official. After attending Salt Lake Comic Con in 2015, Governor Herbert was offered (and took) a small cameo in the movie Sharknado 4, demonstrating a level of commitment to bringing new jobs to Utah that’s hard to rival.
We’re grateful to Governor Herbert for taking the time to join us at Thumbtack, and for all he does to make Utah a great state for the thousands of small businesses that we’re working to support at Thumbtack.
