Private Dance Lessons

  • Serves Clifton, NJ
Ellen W. says, "Yuka Kameda is an excellent tap dance teacher. I have been taking classes with her and have enjoyed them very much. She is not only a creative and talented dancer, but she also is a gifted teacher. She knows how to teach dancing, and she also makes the classes fun. She also emphasizes that we are creating music while tap dancing, which is a very satisfying way to learn. Yuka is also super-responsive. I recently had a foot injury and while it was healing, I attended classes with Yuka and practice the steps and rhythms with my hands. It was unconventional but thanks to Yuka's flexibility, my timing and rhythm improved. Once I was able to dance again with my feet, we saw improvement. She also can tailor her lessons to students at different levels, which is not easy to do. All in all, I would definitely recommend her classes to anyone who wants to tap dance and anyone who wants to have fun while learning!"See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do you wear to swing dance lessons?

Swing dance is an increasingly popular style of ballroom dance with a dress code that reflects its roots in the 1920s-1940s jazz era. Although many studios don’t require historically accurate costumes for their private dance lessons, many dancers want to dress the part. You can wear clothes that are comfortable to move — and sweat — in, such as T-shirts and loose skirts or khakis. Or for an appropriately vintage look, women often wear shirt dresses with a knee-length A-line or circle skirt that allows for plenty of swishy movement. Men usually opt for a button-down shirt and trousers. The most important part of a swing dance outfit is the shoes. Both men and women can opt for simple sneakers, like Keds, or leather dance shoes, such as saddle shoes. Until you have several dance lessons under your belt, stay away from heels.

How much do dance lessons cost?

Adults who want to learn to dance, whether to prepare for a wedding or to meet new people, often enjoy taking dance lessons from an experienced dance instructor. Instructors may offer classes one-on-one to individual students or couples, or to small groups. The national average cost for a dance instructor ranges from $30 to $50. Some studios offer a discounted introductory lessons or group lessons, as well as package deals that are more affordable than paying for individual lessons. Some dance instructors will travel to the student’s home, which usually costs more, while others hold small-group sessions in their studios. If you choose a small-group class, expect to pay less than for individual dance lessons.
