FAQs
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a BA in Theatre Arts from the University of Iowa where I specialized in Costume Design and Lighting Design. I have worked as an assistant for a multitude of designers from regional theatres, university productions and Broadway. Most recently, I was employed as a design assistant and stylist by Arena Stage.
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
I've always been fascinated by clothing but I started my journey as a designer in high school when I was chosen by our director to style our show. I had absolutely no clue as to what costumes to put on my fellow actors but somehow it came together. I then focused on earning my degree in costume design for the theatre and then expanded my knowledge to photography, where I mix my experience as a costume designer, lighting designer, and stylist.
- Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?
I was the lead assistant/stylist for Arena Stage's "Smart People." This is a modern-dress show with four characters, each with at least five different looks. I have been working closely with the designer and have done all the shopping on the show. We went into our fourth week of rehearsal and the show was in incredible shape because of the countless shopping I coordinated. By the time, technical rehearsal and previews came around, not much changed because I was able to anticipate many changes early on in the process and I was always ready with options. It was a huge show, but it was crazy fun!
