Introduction: I have 40 years of experience in all facets of home repair, maintenance and improvement, from framing and sheetrock to finish carpentry, to the painting and wallpapering that finishes the job. Much of my experience is with old homes from the 1700's and especially the 1800's. My own house dates to 1850. One of my specialties is space utilization in houses. People often think they need more house, when actually what they need is better use of the space they already have. I take great care to be reliable and efficient in my work. Many of my customers tell me about their experience with other contractors in these words: "This isn't what I wanted, but this is what I got.". I take care to listen to what my customers want so they end up with a job that is exactly what they wanted. I like working with customers, getting to know their preferences and styles, so I can provide the improvements that suit them and make them happy. I like the variety of my work, the different phases of the job that, together, make for a finished improvement.

I can't say enough about Beth. I bought a small house in 1996, and for the first few years, every time I hired a contractor he would point in horror at something and say "A homeowner did that." I found Beth through a neighbor. She has done work for me since 2000 or so -- everything from small jobs (hanging blinds, installing shutters, fixing broken doors, painting) to large ones (gut-rehabbing of a bathroom; building/installing another bathroom; knocking down a wall to join 2 tiny rooms into one big one; putting in replacement windows). All my old "homeowner-did-that" problems have been solved and I even was able to make changes to improve the flow of the house. Or really, Beth did-- she is the brains of this operation - she is organized, responsive, and very knowledgeable. I learned early the best approach was to describe my vision for a new project with her and then discuss how best to accomplish it. Beth draws on years of experience to reality-check dreams so that they are buildable realities (rather than becoming headaches). She also has put me in touch with good subcontractors and vendors for specific tasks she cannot do, and then coordinates their work. I would probably not still be a homeowner -- I'd have given up long ago on the maintenance and gone back to renting -- if it weren't for her.

Beth Richardson should be declared a National Treasure. I cannot say enough good about her. She gives an honest estimate of when she will be able to do the work, calls when promised and keeps you informed how the schedule is working. You can contact her by e-mail or phone. At the job, she is efficient, knowledgeable and professional. She “thinks with you” to get the best results for what you want to have done. She can execute projects on her own, or help you with yours. Either way, she is a delight to have around. And she keeps her eyes open while she is working and if she notices something not even related to the project but that might need attention, she is sure to tell you about it and let you make the decision of how to proceed. I cannot recommend her enough. Unlike so many contracting experiences, this one os a real pleasure.

Beth has been doing work for me since 2014,when I bought a large multifamily house built in 1795. It was truly dilapidated at the time, and is now a nice home for me and two quaint upscale rental apartments. Beth has done everything from tearing out floors and walls to drywall to tile and flooring to putting in entirely new kitchens and bathrooms. She truly listens to what you want, and asks questions to make sure she understands. She thinks of what will make convenient living. She is always thoughtful, neat and organized, which makes it a lot easier to have work done while you are actually living in the house she is working on. I truly cannot praise her enough.

Beth Richardson performs top-notch house repairs. Her skills are many: exterior and interior carpentry, masonry repointing, re-shingling, damp-proofing, and insulation, to mention but a few. In matters of planning, she is an attentive listener who comes up with insightful practical advice. Over a two-year period she worked for us over 700 hours. In addition to carrying out expert repairs throughout the premises (including the tricky restoration of a rotting nineteenth-century porch roof), Beth devised numerous clever and useful improvements. Beth put down hard wood flooring in my living room and dining room. She turned an old garage into a beautiful working yoga studio. She is very precise in her work and pays attention to details. She comes up with ideas to improve designs that help make life easier for the homeowner. One of her many gifts is figuring out how to solve problems no one else will touch. She is prompt, keeps her work area clean and works with your budget. Beth is the most honest person I know and I would recommend her 100% to anyone who needs home improvement projects from the biggest to the small bothersome fix-it issues every house has.

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
I prefer to work by the hour as that seems the most fair way of charging. My rate is $35/hr. If a job goes quickly then the customer isn't overcharged, and if a job gets complicated by unforeseen problems, then I am not working without pay. Some jobs are very straightforward and I can give a total-job price for those. For most jobs, I would have to take a look at the job to give an estimate.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
For new customers I like to meet in person and look at their situation. From this a can get a better idea of what the needs of the job are and how I can best be of service to the customer.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a BA in General Studies from SUNY Oneonta (NY). Through the years I have always been interested in learning about all kinds of things and I have continued this study in my career. Construction has changed a lot in the past 40 years and I have found great pleasure in studying new techniques and materials as they are developed.
