Hired on Thumbtack

Couldn't give a half star or rating would have been two and a half stars. My project was to replace an existing ceiling fan with a new fan on a vaulted ceiling. Rob Symmons from Labbie Electrical gave me a pricing window over the phone of $235 to $300 to install fan. I was charged $302 plus tax for a total of $326.16 which was by far the most expensive of any other pro who responded to my project on Thumbtack. Rob and his helper were in my home on Friday, March third for approximately 85 minutes. After the fan was installed Rob tested it and there was a noticeable wobble on high setting and somewhat less on medium speed. After Rob read the blade balancing instructions some measurements were taken and they added a weight to one of the fan blades. Next, with the remote control in his hand Rob tested the fan again. It appeared that the wobble was less pronounced and Rob made some general comment about how he thought that the brace or bracket that held the fan in place was not ideal. I didn't give it much thought at the time, however several hours later when my wife arrived home i turned the fan on to high speed and it wobbled badly. Apparently Rob had somehow failed to use the high speed setting when he tested the fan after placing balancing weight on the blade. He could't have otherwise i would have noticed the wobble earlier on when he was present. I later placed a call to him and left him a message which he returned. I missed the callback from him but he did state that he would be in my area on Monday and that he would stop by. I needed specific information on why he thought there would still be a wobble so that i could post a review on the LampsPlus website where i bought the fan. At that time i had not yet read the blade balancing instructions which clearly stated that any weight(s) placed on blades should be done so on the "centerline" of the blade which was not done in this case. The weight was placed towards the edge. I later made two more calls to Rob and those calls went unanswered. He also did not show up at my house on Monday as he said he would. We now have a fan in a room with cathedral ceilings that can not be run on high speed. How much of that is due to fan hardware and how much is attributable to Labbie Elec. is hard to determine.Failure to follow specific instructions for balancing, not testing the fan at high speed setting wether done intentionally or not and then not returning calls does put considerable onus on Labbie Elec. I could have achieved the same results for at least half the price had i chosen someone else! PS: I had a ceiling fan installed a while back in a room with no existing light fixture or fan in the ceiling. That was much more labor intensive and cost me only $285.00. Unfortunately that electrician was unwilling to take on this project so i was forced to look elsewhere.
