Introduction: Mindia teaches flute and general western classical and world music to students of all ages. Her method is non-competitive - but rigorous - deeply enriching, expansive and fun! In addition to the silver flute with it's vast repertoire and potential for improvisation, she is a teacher and performer on the the classical Indian bansuri flute, a deeply meditative and expressive art form. She has had the opportunity to study with some of the worlds greatest Indian classical musicians and she welcomes the opportunity to pass on this unique and beautiful art form. Her training is classically based yet she draws from many methods in her teaching including Suzuki, Orff, El Systema and styles and genres from around the world including jazz, folk, Indian and Balinese Gamelan. She has her own 16 piece Balinese Gamelan orchestra upon which to teach students who may want either a few introductory lessons or who may want to go deeper. She is a professional recording artist and performer who has received numerous awards and fellowships for her recordings, compositional and educational work. There is almost nothing more satisfying to me than knowing I have opened doorways for someone into the profound and exhillarating experience of making music! I know how enriching and life changing the act of bringing forth music from one's own being, either for oneself or with and for others can be. It is my honor to be able to guide and mentor others in this process. I have been a musician-composer-recording artist and educator my entire life. I have won many awards for my work and this is due to the fact that I have a deep unrelenting passion for what I do. I teach privately and in schools as an artist in residence. My recordings are available on iTunes and via CD Baby. You can also find them on my website. I'm available to travel anywhere in Marin County California to teach privately or to small groups of students. I am also available and happy to teach over the internet via SKYPE. I'm also willing to travel outside of Marin to the greater Bay Area and beyond for performances, workshops individual and group teaching where it is financial feasible to do so.

Mindia has been a performing musician teaching flute, general and world music in the schools for many years. I am a violin student studying the Suzuki method and Mindia has taught me a great deal about music and improvisation for any instrument. She is patient, kind and deeply wonderful and passionate about music. She has tremendous expertise with flute, both the western classical silver flute and the Indian bamboo flute called bansuri. She is especially creative and humanistic in the way she teaches.

Mindia has a passion for music and has a very supportive teaching style. She is well versed in western music theory and improvisational jazz music. Mindia has studied classical indian music which gives her a unique understanding of modal jazz and world music.

FAQs

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

For western silver flute I teach 1/2 hour, 45 min. and 1 hour lessons. Lessons are usually weekly. Bansuri students typically learn for 1 hour or 1 and 1/2 hours and generally come either once a week or every other week. Gamelan lessons can by individual or in an ongoing workshop context. Lessons start at $40 per half hour and are usually paid at the beginning of the month. If a student cancels within 24 hours I will try to reschedule within the week. If I cancel I will always reschedule.

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

Please call me and we will talk about your needs and desires for a music teacher. I will tell you how I like to work. If the fit is good we will schedule a lesson. And if we both enjoy our first lesson together we are on our way to becoming great allies on the artistic path and this wondrous journey of life!

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I am a professional award winning musician-composer-educator; a Fulbright Scholar, a Smithsonian Fellow and 7 time Marin Arts Council award winner. My recordings are available through many sources including iTunes and CD Baby. I have a Master's and BA in Music and related subjects. I have a teaching credential in music.
