Introduction: I graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in Elementary Education. Following graduation, I spent a full year interning in inner-city Chicago. I have been teaching for the last 5 years in Michigan and have only received "effective" and "highly effective" ratings in all areas. I recently began my Master's in Elementary Literacy. During our first session, I spend time talking with both the parent and student, asking about concerns, questions, areas of strength, and areas to target. I also do an interactive, hands-on assessment with the student to see what they have already mastered and what they need support with. Then, after the initial session, I create a completely personalized goal tracker, one form that is student friendly and one form that is parent friendly, to monitor growth and to set new goals once previous goals are reached. This helps build the connection between parent, student, and myself as the tutor, and encourages a learning environment focused on student success. I look forward to helping your child gain confidence and a love for learning! I am a big believer in utilizing a student's unique learning styles and I love that I have the freedom to do that in a one-on-one setting. I provide personalized instruction that meets the individual needs of each child in the way they learn best, whether that be kinesthetic, auditory, or visual. I am extremely passionate about education. I am flexible to the needs of the student and the wishes of the parent because I believe we are a team, and I love helping children reach their full potential!

Sarah Hayner is a fantastic teacher. She was able to give my son individualized attention to his own unique learning style to help him understand exactly what he needed to know and help it stick with him. I can't speak highly enough of her.

My son had Mrs.Hayner last year as his teacher and she is well qualified in all subjects. Mrs. Hayner also works one on one with a child. My son struggles in reading and speeling and she really worked with him. I would recommend her for any and all areas of study.

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
For tutoring services, I charge $30 per hour or $20 per half hour. I charge an additional $5 per hour if I am commuting over 15 minutes.I am flexible to meeting in my home, the student's home, or at another location (library, etc.).
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I take time to speak with both the parent and the child, getting to know what their goals are and what they'd like to see happen from the tutoring sessions. I ask the parent if they are comfortable with their student completing a brief assessment (I try to keep these hands on and fun!). I also facilitate a discussion with the parent and student to find the child's learning style. This typically helps me find areas of strength and also goals that we can work on together. I am very understanding, too, of the parent's wishes for this initial meeting. I like to think of the first session as a time to get to know each other and learn the child's educational goals so their tutoring sessions are as beneficial and enjoyable as possible.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have my Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Michigan State University and am currently working on my Master's in Elementary Literacy. I have my Professional Degree in Education and have taught K-6th grades in the past 5 years before making the decision to stay with my little one during the day.
