Hiring contractors can be tough, especially without personal recommendations. I did my due diligence and am so pleased we picked David for our porch remodel. He did an awesome job (see picture). The job itself involved teardown of old deck, installation of Trex decking, Royal Vinyl Trim and Pressure-Treated Wood for the railings (we wanted long-lasting underfoot materials but to keep the price down overall). The trim material was completely his suggestion and it turned out really nice and was much cheaper than Trex. David's response to the Q&A on this website describe him and his partner down to a tee. We got three bids in all, including from the well-marketed porch companies in the City (with an office, sales rep etc etc.). They were both really polished when they turned up and I'm sure they would have done a good job but their bid was significantly more than David's. David is more old school. He knows he does a good job at a reasonable price so doesn't need a smooth marketing machine behind him. During the bid process, I particularly liked that he recommended a 7 inch rise on the front steps as per city standards (he immediately noticed that our old steps were much higher than this - something we had found a struggle). He also explored the possibility of restoring our old steps (rather than ripping them down) but noted that the wood underneath was all completely rotten due to poor ventilation. He was the only bidder that looked at our existing porch in this much detail and that helped to build trust early on. David took his time to get every detail right and it shows. Perhaps the best endorsement is that a number of our neighbors have complimented our new porch. Two were even so impressed they asked for David's number so we might be seeing him again on the block soon!

Dave was quick to give a quote for a header to be installed to hang a deck from our third floor balcony. He knew we were on a quick timeline, and he began work really fast. He was also quick to respond to requests and stayed on task to compete to specifications. In addition, his quote was extremely reasonable. I will be hiring him for additional projects coming up.

Wonderful!!! David saved the existing wooden roof structure on our deck and we were very lucky to have found him. No one wanted to tackle the project, everyone thought it would be easier just to tear it down, but David was ready, able, and started the job the very next day. I was very impressed with his attention to detail and felt very confident in his abilities to safely fix the roof structure of our deck. At David's suggestion, he expertly installed a new beadboard ceiling and trim. Our deck and roof are now rock solid and look beautiful! Extremely reasonable pricing considering the amount of work and careful thought that had to go into this project. Again, we are so lucky to have found him. Thank you, David!!!

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I touch base to discuss and initially assess their situation, then we meet and make a game plan. Then if mutually agreeable, I get right to work. I have a saying, "When you hire me, you get me." I do have a few employees, but rarely are they on the job without me. I never sub out my work, nor do I overbook my schedule. I won't get rich, but it's just my way.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have only in recent years, finally taken the time to go to college, for stationary engineering, minoring in heating and air, as I always found it interesting.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
As a teenager I was taken under the wing of a well- seasoned, old school kinda guy, who generously taught me everything he knew, and still to this day, 30+ years later, there are always new things to learn and hone my skills.
