Introduction: The private flute and piano lessons I provide are a study in mindful practice - taking the attention of my students and directing it in ways that are productive and engaging, while encouraging each new musician to find motivation in daily practice. "It is a matter of time, patience, and intelligent work." - Trevor Wye Trevor Wye's quote is the foundation of my methods. I honestly believes that with the right guidance, anyone can learn to play music well. While many will say, "Practice makes perfect!" I sincerely insist that the old saying isn't true and can be detrimental to learning an instrument, and instead prefer, "Perfect practice, makes perfect!" That being said, the most important thing is to enjoy yourself, because without the desire and motivation, learning becomes infinitely more difficult. So let's make it EASY! Another unique aspect of my lessons is that I try to make them as cost-efficient as possible, so that anyone can take lessons. I also like to incorporate technology into my lessons, with recommendations for free apps that act as tuners and metronomes. Each of my students will have access to a virtual lesson folder on Google Drive, which includes all of their current music, recordings of their progress, as well as PDFs of their receipts and additional practice sheets, and online exercises that I created specifically for my students, using musictheory.net. Feel free to check me out on LinkedIn as well, at linkedin.com/in/rmooremusiclessons My time at Truman State University pursuing my Bachelor Degree in Music Performance, primary instrument flute, secondary piano, was a fantastic experience. With small classes, and private lessons with some of the most amazing musicians in the country, I had the opportunity to really roll up my sleeves and dig in deeply into music history, theory, and pedagogy. Music is more than just that song on the radio, or Mozart, or Taylor Swift, it's math, science, history, engineering, research, analysis! I really love being able to make lessons not only easy, but engaging with little tidbits of useful information sprinkled throughout the lesson. By simply providing a little back ground into music, it opens up a better comprehension of how music works, like learning a new language. Isn't it easier to learn a foreign language if you understand each word and underlying syntax, rather than just learning how to say the word? My ultimate goal is to ensure that my students understand enough about music, that they can: • Look at a piece without playing it, and be able to "hear" exactly what's going on in the piece. • To Identify patterns by performing a quick macro analysis, and be able to break down the piece into easy-to-learn sections. • Apply my favorite method for sight reading, using mindful techniques for quick comprehension. • Understand how to find the best fingerings when learning a new piece. • Be familiar enough with scales and common chords, that they can take any melody and create their own chord progression. • Know exactly how to use their time outside of the lesson in the most efficient way possible. Music is much more difficult to learn when you don't take lessons that provide hand-in-hand theory and history. Adding that into the lesson, and watching my students begin to apply theory on their own is awesome! Most of the time, they don't realize that they're doing it, because it becomes second nature. Oh, and I also enjoy gossiping about dead composers. Don't even get me started on Robert Schumann, the "other bad boy" of the Romantic Era. Who was the original "bad boy" of the Romantic Era? I guess you'll just have to take lessons with me to find out! :)
