- What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?
Many times when people call on us for either a full roof or roof repair they are at a loss for words when trying to describe what they want simply because they don't know some basic terminology! Whether you need a simple repair or have a large project in mind this article should assist you in communicating with your contractor and or supplier. There are several things to consider when it comes to roof renovation. Pitch is particularly important and is useful information for the contractor to have. Pitch is the steepness of your roof. 1/12 (flat roof)- 24/12 (straight up and down). Knowing the square of your roof is also important. 1 square equals 100 square feet. For example if your roof is 2000 square feet it is 20 square. Pitch will also play a factor when calculating the square footage of a roof. The square footage of a home is not an exact reflection of the square footage of a roof. Many websites and apps will do the calculation for you if you know the pitch and square footage. Roof Sheathing is your decking, OSB. It is laid over the rafters and essentially is the first layer of your roof. There are times upon inspection when your installer will find that portions of your decking need torn out and replaced. This will result in a slightly higher end bill, but is imperative if any rotted wood is found. Roof Felt and ice and water shield is the next layer. It is installed over your decking and must never be left out! Lastly, there are many materials besides asphalt that can be installed in your roofing system. This final layer is where you ensure the life of your roof and personalize the look of a home.
