FAQs
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
These are approximate and vary project-to-project-- For proofreading/copyediting: $2 per page For copyediting + content editing/margin notes: $3 per page For writing book proposals & the like: I don't have a standard rate; it depends on length of project, how much outside research I have to conduct, etc.
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
First, I like to get a broad outline of the project itself. For what/whom are you writing? Oftentimes clients start out merely wanting a second-set of eyes to proofread, but I think it's important to consider content and clarity as well. So I like to get a solid idea of your purpose for writing and the crucial points you want to make. An email discussion about your goals/what you wish to achieve is very important. I don't like to edit blindly without some pre-discussion, because what may seem like small grammatical changes vary based on larger meaning. I like to build up a relationship with a client, and also emphasize that sometimes the revision process is not a one-stop endeavor-- sometimes, to really make what you want to say be as clear as possible-- we need to do some kind of back-and-forth exchange with the document. Then, of course, I ask what your timeline is and we figure out the pricing. I guarantee finishing within your specified timeline.
