Introduction: My goal as a teacher of singing is to help students find their own voices and their own authentic ways of singing and to have fun in the process. I start by teaching healthy vocal technique, which consists of various exercises to help them sing with an open, full, free, supported, and controlled tone. Ultimately, I want to help them enrich their experiences as artists and put them in the creative driver’s seat! The students I teach have varied interests. Many of them are pursuing musical theater where they learn how to sing the greats of the classical musical theater canon as well as the more contemporary styles where they can explore belting, provided the voice is ready for that. I also have students who are songwriters who want to learn how to communicate their lyrics more fully and support their creations with a strong foundation in breath control, vocal flexibility and strength. Still others are pursuing a more classical route and want more freedom in their sound. I often help them prepare for solo/ensemble competitions and recitals. My goal for all of my students is to free their vocal tension so that, whatever the form of music, they are freed to fully express themselves without feeling limited by lack of mastery over their own instruments, and I thoroughly enjoy helping them achieve that!
