- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I always explain the difference between a medical massage and a spa massage; it is almost always misunderstood. A medical massage is a massage treatment focused on providing therapeutic pain relief associated with an acute or chronic condition(s) diagnosed by a physician. A prescription from your doctor is helpful, but not required. A spa massage is generally focused on overall relaxation.
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
My daughter inspired me to become a medical massage therapist. She is severely Autistic, now 23 years old, and doing well. When she was younger she had many issues with being touched and would tense her body up so much she would become rigid and not allow anyone to touch her. During an outing to the nail salon with me when she was 16, she was drying her nails in the drying station when a salon employee approached her asking if she would like a complementary neck massage. Because she doesn't really speak, and I was getting my nails finished up, I didn't have enough time to warn the employee against it as she doesn't like to be touched- and to my amazement her reaction was all but astounding. I had never seen her close her eyes and seem to be enjoying being touched. I had to investigate why/how this could be... and that little experience sent me on my path of where I am today. I am proud to say that my daughter (Samantha) is one of my best clients :-)!
