Introduction: Hi! I'm a former teacher and math specialist with 5 years of teaching experience. I've been doing private tutoring for about 8 years. I love math, and I love making it fun! Watching my students grow in skill and confidence brings me great joy. I specialize in math for elementary and middle school students but am interested in helping with any subject.

As we moved to the new school zone from a private school, it became evident that our son need help in adjusting in the new environment and overcome struggling in 5th grade math. Lauren is highly qualified to tutor our 5th grade son. She has actual teaching experience in math and helping us to have a better understanding as how the school system function in the U.S.A. We find her to be a valuable contributor to Ryan doing well in math. She gave advice on how Ryan can do better not only in math but also in other subject matter. In addition she reached out to his teacher to keep informed on his needs and current math work so it is in line with what he is learning in school. More importantly she has my son's respect and he is very receptive to her tutoring.

I met Lauren while she worked as an elementary school teacher at my children's parochial school in southern California. She is an excellent teacher in the classroom, providing sound instruction on the school's curriculum, as well as positive feedback to her students. My middle daughter struggled in elementary school. After having Lauren as her teacher, I hired her to tutor my daughter's during the years of 5th-7th grade. My daughter struggled in several areas including: math, reading comprehension, study skills and writing. Lauren met with my daughter in our home on a weekly basis. She used the curriculum that the parochial school provided, as well as, she incorporated different learning modalities, which assisted my daughter in the understanding the various concepts. Today, my daughter is a senior at a university back east, majoring in kinesiology and will graduate in May 2016. Mrs. Barber tutored my daughter in 6th grade math this past year. My daughter was struggling with math basics. Within the first week her confidence was up and her grades improved. She made the honor roll the last three quarters. Although her math grade has improved overall, Mrs. Barber still tutors her as we prepare for 7th grade and the high school placement test. My daughter adores her. She makes math fun. I highly recommend her. She has changed my daughter's perception of math, at the same time building confidence in herself.

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
I charge $50-60/hour depending on the distance I have to travel.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I like to speak with my clients over the phone first to learn more about their student and his/her needs, as well as explain my experience and approach to student learning. Then we discuss pricing and timing, and get started! I am willing to meet in person to discuss as well.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a masters degree in education administration, a bachelors in elementary education, a clear multi-subject credential in California (and am in the process of transferring it to Virginia), 5 years of classroom teaching experience (including 3 as a math specialist), and 8 years of private tutoring experience.
