Introduction: Effective, humane dog training for all behavior issues. All carrot, no stick. No kidding. Casey is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer (CPDT-KA), the only national accreditation for dog trainers that demonstrates both technical proficiency and a commitment to continuing education. Casey is also an honors graduate and staff member of the prestigious Academy for Dog Trainers (CTC) and is certified in separation anxiety (CSAT). She works with all breeds, all behavior problems, from puppies to grey faces, and has a special place in her heart for dogs with fear and aggression. I enjoy seeing the quality of life improve in unexpected ways for families and their dogs. People are often surprised at the how simple changes in habit can make profound differences in their dogs' behavior, and they're even more surprised to learn that you can teach a dog to go to his crate automatically when the doorbell rings, for example! I enjoy helping people find humane, force-free solutions to their dog's behavior problems. Years ago, when we had an aggressive dog, I wanted a dog trainer who would help us with a concrete, written plan to help us change his behavior. We couldn't find one, so instead followed the advice of the trainer on TV: we intimidated, coerced, and frightened our already distressed dog to the point that he began to bite us. We lost him later that year to euthanasia. Today, I am the dog trainer I needed when I was heartbroken, worried and confused about how to help our sweet Cooper.

Upward Hound, Mrs. Casey, worked with my dog and I to decrease his anxiety and some other concerning behaviors. The entire process went very well from treatment planning, goal achievement, and continued assessment. The only concerns experienced were if my dog and I did not follow-through with our homework assignments. Otherwise the Upward Hound therapy sessions are very effective and successful using only positive reinforcement method.

So far amazing! Casey has done a really fantastic job of answering our questions, explaining the process, and making us feel comfortable. It's slow progress, but I feel confident that we'll get there in the end. I am SO happy that we found her!

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Dog training is an unregulated industry. As a result, dog trainers have a varying degree of understanding of applied behavior analysis, or evidence-based training methods. Today it is still legal to choke, pinch, hit, shock, and swing a dog around by his collar until he passes out without getting permission from or even notifying the dog's owner. Look for transparency in training techniques. Ask you trainer for specific answers to these questions: * What will happen to my dog when he gets it right? * What will happen to my dog when he gets it wrong? * Is there any less coercive option?
