I have played and worked with Jake over the past couple of years, and he's impressed me with his musical skill and his commitment to helping others learn. We worked together over the past year to manage community contra dances and a weekly school to teach tunes to college students and other community members who would form the band for those dances. Jake was a skilled and generous teacher, working with people at various skill levels (and coming from various playing styles) to help them improve their individual playing as well as get stronger at playing with other musicians and for dancers. He is an excellent player in Scottish and Cape Breton styles, a strong leader in group settings, and also just lots of fun to play with!

Jake is a fantastic fiddler teacher. I took lessons from him for several months when I was living in St. Lawrence County, NY. I learned not only some great Cape Breton tunes but a lot about the history of this music. Since I was a classically-trained player new to this style of fiddling, Jake and I worked a lot on technique and capturing the sound and feel of this style of fiddling. I'm a much more natural, nuanced player thanks to Jake. He takes a careful, thoughtful approach to teaching while keeping the lessons fun. I can't say enough about how much I enjoyed studying with Jake, and if we end up in the same town once more I'd love to study with him again.

While Jake holds a bachelor's degree in music from St. Lawrence University, he has also studied the Cape Breton style fiddle for many years, traveling thousands of miles to learn from masters. Simultaneously, he has also pursued a career in Americana/Folk music with singer Alex Smith. Jake and Alex have toured the East Coast together. In 2014 the album "Hamilton County," (produced by Wepecket Island Records) won the NTCMA "Folk Album of the Year" award.
