Introduction
Unlike many patent attorneys who are in large firms and usually have mostly large companies as clients, I particularly enjoy working with individuals and small companies (although I have done patent work for a few university and larger companies). Inventors, by definition, are creative people. I love meeting with inventors, and sharing their enthusiasm for the possibility of obtaining a patent.

FAQs

  • How did you get started doing this type of work?

When I was in law school (Duke Univ. School of Law), I was contacted by law firms to see if I would like to be a patent attorney. My background in biology (Ph.D. in Bacteriology) was of interest to firms that wanted to enter the new field of patenting biotechnological inventions. Although I had not previously considered patent law, it sounded like an interesting field, and it is!

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Be sure that the patent attorney whom you hire is licensed by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Also be sure to discuss fees upfront so that you know what to expect.
