I tutor SAT, ACT, GRE, GMAT, MCAT, LSAT, math, biology, chemistry, Latin, and ancient Greek. I'm currently a senior at Arizona State University, majoring in biochemistry, anthropology, and classical studies; I am also obtaining a certificate in medieval and renaissance studies. One aspect of my tutoring that I've found my students and their parents appreciate is that I am flexible. Since I have a varied educational background, I can tutor more than just one subject. Beyond that, I am available to come to your house or a coffee shop, and I will also do online tutoring and quick questions over text or call. I love helping make an impact on my students' education and oftentimes their life. I have gotten students into college, into grad school, scholarships up to full-ride, and better grades. Ian is an excellent tutor. He knows all the little tricks the test designers use to trip you up and confuse you. He shows you shortcuts and strategies for each test. In my case (GMAT) he explained why missing the first 5 questions does much more harm than missing the last 5. He goes above and beyond the basic tutor role. He explains why he assigned me 5 homework problems a day for the next 5 days instead of 25 problems in one night. He also made me promise not to party for two nights before the test, which is a massive pain but it is worth giving up a night of drinking to get into the Masters program I want. He asks pointed questions instead of just explaining the answer. This helps me discover why the other choices were wrong, not just why the correct answer was right. This has forced me to slow down during the test and to work through the problem, instead of just going with my knee jerk reaction. The bottom line is: if you want to do well on your standardized test, go with Ian.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
The first step is to get to know the student and the way they work. The first session is often geared towards watching the current method that the student uses to approach his/her work. Between that first session and the next session is when I plan how to teach the student.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been tutoring for a living for three years, but have been tutoring here and there for 8 years. My mom was a teacher and then later a tutor, and I picked up a lot of tricks from her. I am about to receive my BS in Biochemistry, my BS in Anthropology, my BA in Classical Studies and a certificate in Medieval and Renaissance Studies. I know 8 languages to varying levels of proficiency.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
I started pursuing tutoring after I took my MCAT (the admissions test for Medical School) and decided I wanted to continue with standardized tests because I actually enjoy taking those tests. The more I worked with the tests and students, I found that I wanted to help students to beat them, so they could get on with their lives and pursue their future.
