We weren't sure what to expect from a self-defense class, but Max offered me a good breakdown over email prior to the coming in to teach, and once here, he was good about demonstrating techniques and allowing the class to do as much or as little as they were comfortable with. I found Max's lessons to be practical for the common person, and his teaching style is to the point, but relaxed. He'll answer questions as you go along and help you to chain together the different things he teaches you. We've asked him back for every other week, so he's definitely doing the right things! We have a lot of fun, but also learn a lot from Max.
So great! Martin taught a self-defense class at our office with his colleague, Angelo. The class was informative, fun, and gave us all a basic understanding of some moves we could use if we ever had to defend ourselves. Martin answered all of our questions about different scenarios and gave clear, useful instructions. We had a blast and really enjoyed ourselves. Highly recommend!

My three children have been training with Jay since they were five years old. Now that they are becoming teenagers, they look to him for physical training but also as a life coach. Jay teaches self discipline and respect as he coaches. My wife and I have been training with Jay for the last one year. We have trained with Jay for fitness, self defense, kickbox, and jujitsu. Synergy Self Defense is absolutely fantastic. Shermie is very knowledgable and meets you at "your level" so you never feel behind. I noticed within a couple months that she taught me sooooo much. I wish I still lived in San Francisco so that I could continue to go. If you are lucky enough to try it you will enjoy it!
I've had one lesson with Cindy so far and loved it! She walked me through proper techniques and we did a variety of self-defense training so I was constantly challenged and learning. I can say that after one lesson I already feel much more prepared, but I'm looking forward to learning more and getting stronger in the process! Ray is great at communicating the basics in a way that is easy to remember. Sometimes trying to learn basic martial arts/self-defense can be intimidating but Ray created a very comfortable environment.
I started working out with Joe in a gym at the University of Southern California. He was apart of the MFA program there and I heard he was some boxer guy. Little did I know that our work outs would not only challenge my athleticism (when I first started I could only jump rope for 30 seconds straight and I considered myself in great shape. Now I can jump for 30 minutes) but he also challenged me spiritually. Joe approaches boxing with a philosophy that can aid you in your every day life. Through our training he's helped me build a higher level of self value and confidence, not only as an artist but as a man. He's truly a gem to work with and I highly recommend you support his work. Plus it's really nice to hit something. You'll do plenty of that and feel really good. It's a great sweat and you don't really think about how hard you're working when working out.

We provide private martial arts and self-defense lessons and training. I am not a martial arts instructor who wants to be called master, sifu or some other honorific title; I'm just an easygoing coach with three legitimate, confirmable black belts that will work with you at whatever level you are. I won't force you to train like an Olympian unless you want to, and I don't teach how to dodge bullets or fly through the air. If this sounds like something you might be interested in, read on. "Women make some noise. Take charge of your life and defend yourself." United Studio of Self Defense, Foster City has an ongoing mission: to help the women in our community safeguard themselves against crime and assault, so they may enjoy a long, fulfilled and healthy lives. Our campaign is to help women to be well-informed, prepared with awareness, safety tips and basic defense maneuvers. Self-defense is for young girls, teens and women of all ages. We teach women in the workplace how to defend against using basic in-close kicks and strikes, using everyday keys, tools, writing instruments, self-defense weapons, e.g., kubotans (small metal or wooden stick). We teach to fend off realistic attacks such as two-hand grabs, single-wrist grabs, chokes, bear hugs, hair pulls and knife or club attacks. We work on strength and core training, which includes pad and bag work where women can really display their power and cardio endurance and fight back if they have to. Our program teaches the girls how to empower themselves mentally and physically, to know their surrounding and to prevent becoming a victim of kidnapping, assault, rape or murder. One out of 5 women are attacked in the US, which includes statistics even from our universities. Girls have a higher ratio of kidnappings compared to boys, just as women fall victim compared to men. In the US alone, not including worldwide statistics, 11,766 women were killed through domestic violence and 24 experienced intimate partner violence per minute. Our campaign is to reduce these stats. It's important to safeguard the women of our community, to fight for a safe place to live and work. The women in our program can customize the class schedule and include female family members or friends, a social club or work team. The sessions range from 1 hour to 2 hours and some will sign up for an ongoing program. We are available every day of the week, weekdays, Mondays through Fridays, from 12:00 to 9:00 p.m. and on Saturdays, from 9:00 to 2:00 p.m. and Sundays, from 9:00 to 11:00 p.m. Many of the women who complete our training have a great time and learn a lot about themselves and their surroundings, feeling the empowerment from within, feeling fearless to impact their own lives. Having lived in Japan for 8 years does not make me a better instructor, in and of itself. Nor does having been a tournament champion. 35+ years doing Karate and several years doing other martial arts helps my level of understanding. Having a deeper technical knowledge than almost anyone else outside of Japan helps as well. But what really sets me apart is the passion that I have, not only for Karate-do as a way of life, but for teaching it in a way that helps students progress as quickly as they are capable of.
