I think there are several key things to look for when hiring a professional makeup artist. First, make sure the makeup artist is actually a real professional artist and not just someones cousin who is calling herself/himself a makeup artist. Second, always do a trial, no matter how good the makeup artist their style might not be your personal taste. Lastly, I think having a real connection with your makeup artist and knowing you can communicate well with him/her is key. If you and your artist have communication issues, it doesn't matter how great an artist they are...because they won't listen, which is never a good sign.
