Introduction

Most artists are traditionally trained using a brush. That's why most art looks the same. Brush paintings tend to have this overall moody or muddy appearance. Six years ago I put down the brush and started painting with a palette knife. The paint I mix is the paint that goes on the canvas resulting in colors that are cleaner and brighter than traditional oil paintings. The paintings look almost photographic from afar, but close up, there is the richness of the applied paint stroke. You see the boldly applied paint.

How did you get started doing this type of work?
My grandfather was a self taught oil painter using a palette knife. I would visit him in the summers and sleep next to his easel in his garage loft studio. I guess you might say it is in my gene pool. After a successful business career in the printing industry, I sold my business and started studying oil painting and taking workshops. In 1995 I decided to go full time into oil painting and sold my first oil painting to a total stranger. I have never looked back and sales have been steady, even thru the recent recession.
What types of customers have you worked with?
I am available for personal one on one instruction for oil and acrylics painting techniques. I provide this instruction in a classroom setting or on location on the SF Peninsula. Instruction typically runs from 2-3 hours in the evenings or on the weekends. I am also available for commission work.
Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?
I was recently selected to paint on location at the America's Cup Park on Pier 27/29 from 10 to 5:00pm. This one day event was well attended and I had lots of walk by interest in my art. I am featured on the America's Cup "Art In The Park" webpage. I finished a small 11"x14" oil painting in the morning and a larger 16"x20" one in the afternoon. Can't wait for them to dry so I can frame them!
