Introduction: I have been playing piano and keyboards for over 25 years, and have been working as a teacher for over 12. I firmly believe the Ralph Waldo Emerson quote that "The secret in teaching lies in respecting the student", and I make it my mission to customize my approach to every client that I work with. Unlike many teachers who are only comfortable with one style, I love working with students on any kind of music that sparks their curiosity and passion. Whereas many classically trained teachers only teach from written music, I like to also include a deep exploration of improvisation and playing "by ear", so that my students are comfortable and capable when it comes to playing in contemporary styles. When you combine this with note-reading, exploration of classical repertoire, and a classical attention to detail and technique, you end up with a truly well-rounded musician who's able to operate confidently in today's musical landscape. I hope to be a welcome change of pace from the fear-based, authoritarian teaching styles that are far too common in music education. My philosophy is that by being patient, supportive, and nurturing, students feel safe to be themselves, and can progress more quickly in their musical journey. Teaching has been a blessing to me in so many ways. I love helping others discover their true potential, and firmly believe that EVERYONE is born with musical ability. Teaching is a collaboration, and I learn as much from my students as they do from me! By deconstructing, sequencing, and sharing music with others, I move closer towards my own mastery of this sacred art form. I love the feeling that I am sharing this journey of music with everyone that I work with, and feel blessed to have so many traveling companions on this musical highway!

We have thoroughly enjoyed having Nate as a piano instructor for our 8 year old daughter. Nate is not only a very talented musician, but is also a great teacher. He knows how to connect with our child and listens to her in an effort to create an enjoyable learning environment. For example, in addition to teaching the basic fundamentals, Nate frequently consults my child regarding the type and actual music she wants to learn. If he does not have the music, he takes the time to listen to it and compose a piece for her. He goes above and beyond. I have no doubt that he's doing this for his other students as well. He inspires the love of piano/music by being relatable, understanding and creative with his teaching approach. We are grateful to have found him! Melanie O.

Nate has taught piano to all three of our boys, who now are age 8, 12, and 15. He also led our oldest son's garage band. He has a talent for communicating with kids, where he's fun but also keeps them on task, all while remaining flexible as well. I can see intellectual kids especially liking him. We're big fans of NDT.

Nate is a great piano teacher! He worked with our 12, 9, & 7 year olds for more than a year. Nate builds a great rapport with kids & they respond very well to him. They were always engaged & enthusiastic during their lessons. The kids made a great deal of progress through these lessons with a variety of musical genres. We enjoy working with Nate & highly recommend him!
