Shelly herself is an excellent writer, both technical and creative. She knows the rules of conventional English (says the survivor of eight years of Catholic school grammar, syntax, and sentence diagraming!) Even more important to me, as a veteran sixth grade teacher who has watched her as a parent-volunteer writing teacher, school librarian, play director, and copy editor, she can engage large or small groups of kids and inspire even the most reluctant writer to pick up a pencil and start writing! She has a wonderful sense of humor, which shows up in her own writing, and often in her students'. Additionally, she is professional, reliable, and intelligent enough to critically evaluate/edit college-level, business, and professional writing.

It's so easy to get stuck in the everyday weeds of running your own business and undermine your strategic thinking. I know. As a business writer with a mission to provide information that will benefit my readers, move them forward in their financial or work lives and reinforce the fact that knowledge is power, I've often fallen into that trap. That's when I turn to kb communications. Karen Bodenhorn and her staff provide the coaching to get me back on track. They help me compartmentalize, prioritize and develop the road map to move forward with new and improved ways of doing business. When I want to get smart myself, I turn to kb communications to streamline my business processes and create new and better opportunities for my writing business.

Wow, is all I can say! From the first communication to the last dotted "i" Linda's knowledge of drafting a resume and cover letter, that showcases my talents, has blown me away. Due to unforeseen circumstances, I am looking for work after nearly 12 years at the same company. My resume hasn't been touched during that time, and Linda took my past history and compiled it into a succinct and "modern" presentation of skills. With this new resume, I am looking forward with eager expectations at the job market rather than with the fear or frustration of trying to create something on my own after so many years. Looking for work is difficult enough without the added stress of trying to find the proper buzz words used in the marketplace today. I would recommend Linda Hamilton's expertise to anyone in need of a creative writer.

I know Breyer Editorial Services as Bo Breyer. I was introduced to her by another writer in my group whom Bo had worked with. I have to say that Bo has a real talent for editing and a very perceptive, deft touch. She doesn't take over or try to reshape the work. She tries very hard to understand the point, mood, character, etc., that you're trying to create or get across, and very skillfully shows you the parts that work and the ones that diverge or are redundant or superfluous. When you step back and look at what she's marked up, it invariably feels like it's exactly what you would have seen, and would have wanted to trim, two months or so downstream. The editing process felt very collaborative process. I'm working on a sequel, and I will certainly ask her to edit it as well when the time comes. Will Fournier,

In an impressively timely manner, David Lloyd Sutton thoroughly edited my 170 paged fiction manuscript. His comments were succinct and honest. His grammatical expertise is top notch, as is his attention to detail as well as the bigger matter of plot. I recommend him highly.

Skills for Change coaching is about teaching clients some tools, practices and assumptions to help them get what they need/want from daily living. A core belief is that people are inherently good and inherently sane. How you treat yourself and everyone else relies on this. There is no one up/one down relationship between the coach and the client. A simple worksheet contract is filled out initially to clarify what you want to change in your life. You give the issue that's been bugging you shape by writing it down. Then the Skills for Change coach guides you to identify: - obstacles you face - resources you have - what you have power over and what you don't - depletion of energy and replenishment and how they affect your experience - internalized messages or beliefs that oppress you and ways to manage them - the art and magic of saying "no" - the value in asking for "100% of what you want, 100% of the time" and its benefit to everyone - the patterns and pitfalls of "rescuing" family and friends You learn ways to negotiate effectively and compassionately. I am learning from a coach who puts them into practice every day, Molly Fisk. Molly is a pleasure to work with. Being a poet and a writer as well as a coach, she is able to pare down concepts to their essentials. There is no off-putting jargon, she's funny and kind. She is worthy of your trust and confidence. The tools you are given can be so marvelously effective in getting unstuck and on your way. - Pat Sharp

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

  • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
  • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
  • Expertise in your target area.
  • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

  • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
  • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
