My attorney recommended I use a document preparation service to save cost in our Estate battle until my niece gets an attorney. This was the best advice! I hired Kathleen to file an objection. Her knowledge of forms and the filing process astounds me to this day! I must say, I am a good client as I had my information ready and in good order. ParaLegals are not "Attorneys" and will tell you this upfront. If you know what you need to do but need help filing and preparing your document correctly, I HIGHLY recommend hiring Kathleen. As it turns out there was more property owned by my father. I hired Kathleen again to prepare each of these documents as well.

If you prefer an attorney who will guide you through your Chapter 7 (or Chapter 13) bankrupty with the utmost respect, honesty, professionalism, and courtesy, I would highly recommend the Law Offices of LaJuan E. Wood. Ms. Wood enthusiastically accepted my case when other "well-known" Sacramento bankruptcy attorneys wouldn't. Ms. Wood provided exceptional guidance and assistance throughout my (sometimes) stressful bankruptcy process. Ms. Wood was always positive and assured me that "everything was going to be okay." She consistently returned my phone calls and answered all my questions (and believe me, I had alot of them). My Chapter 7 bankrupty was sucessfully discharged in December 2011. My heart-felt thanks go to Ms. Wood. She definitely changed my opinion about attorneys. So...if you're in need of an attorney, look no further and don't call anyone else in Sacramento...except the Law Offices of LaJuan E. Wood.

Deborah Barron, Esq. is a tough, no-nonsense attorney that fights for women's rights. She regularly takes on large, male-dominated corporations and/or patriarchal institutions and wins. Ms. Barron was especially successful when fighting for me in a sexual harassment case. Sexual harassment still exists and sadly, it is out there everywhere. When any of my female physician colleagues ask if I can suggest an attorney, without hesitation I tell them, Deborah Barron. She is the best.

I came to Amanda in an emergency situation. I was being falsely accused again by my ex. I needed an attorney who could get up to speed on my situation fast. I've had other Attorneys who have been what I call jaded by family court and full of themselves who seemed to care more about them making money than on my case. I was so impressed how quick Amanda got my situation. Amanda asked me quality questions during our initial consultation. This kept our conversations to what was important to my case. I was very disheartened by the family court system in the past with other attorneys and the outcome of some of my previous cases. Amanda reassured me that I was a great father and that the court would see that when presented with the facts. Amanda maintained a very confident and positive attitude which in turn made me feel much better about my horrific situation. Amanda compiled a winning strategy. Amanda presented my case to the court just as she had discussed. In my opinion The end result of my situation or case was that the court saw thru my ex. I Kept positive and focused on Amanda's advice. I got my kids back. My kids and I can do all the things together again that we enjoy, roller skating, geo cacheing, camping, reading, swimming etc etc etc. I owe it all to Amanda. Because of Amanda I now have faith in our Family Court system. If looking for a Lawyer you will want Amanda in your corner. I highly highly recommend Amanda and will use her help again if needed.

in just the first few short hours, Mr. Derby had accomplished so much more on this matter than the first SIX attorneys. Divorce in California can really be so stressful, and complicated. Mr. Derby is an utmost professional. This would be done sooner, but I needed to take some weeks to travel for some healing, and will return in time to wrap up documentation for the court hearing. It makes such a difference to have Mr. Derby on this case, after many years of struggle. I sure appreciate all he is doing.

Mr Buckey was a wonderful source of information. My situation was unique and he did everything he could to help me. Although I did not need Mr. Buckey to represent me after he reviewed all of information, he was still very pleasant and helpful.. It was a pleasure to meet him and I would recommend him to everyone. As I mentioned previously he was a great source of information and he has continued to check with me by email to make sure that I have been able to work out the problems I had.

Who needs an estate plan? Everyone needs some form of planning, although that plan takes a different shape for each person. Let us help you make those important decisions in an informed and compassionate manner. If you prefer, we can meet in the comfort of your own home or office. Why Prepare an Estate Plan? Anybody who has dealt with the probate courts knows they never want to return there. A properly drafted estate plan can save your family thousands of dollars in attorney and court fees. It can expedite quicker distributions to your heirs, resulting in broader investment opportunities. It can also combat the strife among relatives that so many families face after a death. In addition, an appropriate estate plan can minimize the administrative burden your successors will face. Should I Prepare My Estate Plan Now or Later? Wills and Trusts are only the beginning of the planning process. The Law Office of Matthew D. Scott strives to add value to the experience by helping you determine which tools are appropriate for you, and by harmonizing the various components of your full estate plan to accomplish your goals. We can also explain the value of acting now versus later. Unfortunately, many people have false beliefs about estate planning that prevent them from taking action. For example, people assume that if their house is "underwater" - meaning they owe more than their home is worth - then they don't need to put that home in trust. To avoid future expense and inconvenience to you and your heirs, please speak with an experienced attorney for correct advice. At the Law Office of Matthew D. Scott, we have designed a simple three-step process that utilizes modern technology to make the planning process as easy as possible. Please see our website for more details and to schedule a no-cost consultation at your location or ours! We take the pain out of the plan.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What kind of lawyer does wills?

No one likes talking about death, but it’s better than leaving your children or siblings to sort out your estate. A clearly planned will can make the time of mourning easier for everyone. An estate attorney will develop a legal will, create trusts on your behalf, and ensure the proper execution of your estate after you pass away.

Family attorneys and estate attorneys, also called probate and wills attorneys, can each prepare wills. The type of lawyer best suited to prepare your will depends on your situation. Most family attorneys provide services to prepare basic wills, including bequeathing property and personal items to family or naming a guardian for minor children. However, estate attorneys specialize in preparing wills in more complex situations. Consider hiring an estate attorney if you:

    • Have a large number of assets, especially those subject to estate taxes
    • Want to create a trust, such as allowing a spouse to live in your home until he or she dies and then leaving it to your children, or set up long-term care for a beneficiary
    • Have an ownership stake in a business
    • Expect someone to contest your will
    • Want to disinherit your spouse

How do you find a good lawyer for wills?

Estate planning is an important part of financial planning, so it’s important to find the right attorney to prepare your will. Although most family attorneys can put together a basic will, you may want one who specializes in wills and estate planning, especially if you have a lot of assets or a dependent to take care of. You may need an attorney who has expertise in planning and executing trusts and a background in taxes. Ask how the attorney charges; some charge by the hour, others have a set fee for writing wills, and some charge a percentage of the total value of the estate. Make a list of several potential wills attorneys to interview. Make sure you make a strong personal connection with your attorney — you need to be comfortable telling him or her personal, confidential information about your life, and you need to feel that the attorney is committed to solving any problems that may arise while writing your will. Also find out how long the attorney has practiced estate law and whether he or she has handled wills similar to yours.

How much does it cost to have a living will?

Either a family attorney or an estate, or wills, attorney can help you prepare a living will, either as part of your general estate planning or as an individual document. The cost typically ranges from $250 to $500, depending on your attorney’s fees; some charge by the hour, while others have a flat rate for writing a living will. Some states require living wills to be notarized, which adds an average of $5 to $15. In a living will — also called an advanced healthcare directive — you specify whether you want to be kept on life support if you become terminally ill or lapse into a persistent vegetative state. You can also answer other important questions in a living will like your preferences for tube feeding, artificial hydration and pain medication in situations when you cannot communicate your wishes on your own.

How much should an estate plan cost?

The cost of an estate plan depends largely on the number of parts it includes and the complexity of the documents. The most basic estate plan is simply a will, but it may also include designating power of attorney or a health care proxy to another person, writing a living will, or making a HIPAA authorization. The average national cost to make an estate plan ranges from $350 to $900, but can cost much more in complicated situations. For example, an estate attorney may charge only $900 to prepare a basic will providing outright distribution — meaning that property and assets are distributed upon death. Writing a more complicated will and holding assets in trusts can cost $3,000, or more. The process of creating an estate plan generally takes two to four weeks, starting with the initial consultation with the wills attorney to identify areas of concern in order to design an estate plan that fits your goals and budget. Once an estate plan is written, the attorney meets with the clients, a notary, and two neutral witnesses to review and sign the plan and associated documents.
