Introduction: HI! I'm Matt. I'm an award-winning, conservatory-trained pianist, composer, producer, and educator out of Los Angeles 🎶 Though I am a music professor at Occidental College 🤓, I enjoy teaching all ages and levels -- from aspiring beginners and music undergrads to consummate professionals and performing artists alike. I develop custom-tailored lesson plans based on the students' unique goals & prior experience -- this includes popular genres such as classical, jazz, pop, and R&B. I can help you learn improvisation, sight-reading, music production, ear training, and audio engineering. Lessons are always simple, rewarding, and most importantly, fun! This is especially important if you're looking to play music instead of trudge through method-books! 🤗 For in-person lessons, I have a beautiful home studio in Los Angeles with state-of-the-art equipment for recording and teaching (covid compliant 😷) For online Zoom lessons, multiple camera angles accurately resemble the hands-on experience of an in-person lesson (see pics below). *I offer a free 20 min consultation to ensure your satisfaction with the applicable technology 👨‍💻 As a performer, I've worked and toured with some of the best -- the stars of "American Idol", "Glee", and "The Voice,” REO Speedwagon, and Engelbert Humperdinck. A myriad of notable jazz all-stars including Kamasi Washington, Clare Fischer, Bill Watrous, Eric Marienthal, and Zane Musa 🎹 My compositions can be heard in a multitude of media platforms, from various tv commercials, feature films like Big Momma's House III, various movies on The Lifetime Network, and television shows such as “Bones", “Millionaire Matchmaker" and MTV's "10 on top" 🎧 Music has been the passion of my life since I was 4 years old. It is my honor and privilege to share it with you! Please message me with any questions and I look forward to meeting you!

Matt is a great piano teacher- I am returning after many years away. He has been patient and yet knows when you can do more. Fun to work with as well- I am taking lessons via Zoom and he has a great set up that makes remote learning really work for student and teacher.

Matt is an exceptional teacher! He was able to quickly assess my skill level and determine what I could already do and where I needed the most help. I like that he encouraged me to choose the songs to work on during our lessons which will make practicing a lot more fun. The technology he utilizes is top notch for virtual lessons. Matt is punctual, patient, and his skill level is inspiring. I would recommend him to anyone who wants to improve their piano/keyboard skills and have fun doing it.

I'm mostly self-taught and had reached a point where I felt lessons were the next step in my progression as a pianist. I interviewed several piano instructors, both virtually and in-person, and although I am in the Washington, DC area and Matt is in LA, I selected Matt because he has a teaching style that I found to be the perfect balance between structure and creativity. I've found Matt to be patient with a great sense of humor, and, most importantly, through Matt's instruction I feel like I have learned a lot in a relatively short amount of time. I haven't found virtual lessons to be a hinderance to learning and would highly recommend Matt to anyone who is looking for a great instructor!

Details: 26 - 44 years old • Yes, the student can read music • No formal training; some self-taught experience • Classical • Yes, the student has a piano • 60 minutes • Remotely (phone or internet) • My home, venue, etc. • At the pro’s location

Matt is a talented and versatile player and teacher. He has a deep knowledge of jazz theory and piano technique, and adapts his teaching and feedback to my musical interests. I wasn't sure how remote video lessons would work, but he has a professional zoom setup and a great ear, so it's really not a barrier. I'm already noticing improvement and having a lot of fun playing!
