“Iris is a fantastic teacher. A patient and engaging educator, she is truly one of the hidden gems in your neighborhood if you are looking for piano lessons. She is an outstanding pianist, musician, and intellect who is disciplined, knowledgeable, compassionate, and dedicated to her piano students. I have played piano for over 20 years and she has shown me many things about technique and musicianship that go far beyond the conventional scope of pedagogy and artistry. If you are a serious young musician looking to make a career professionally in piano, or if you are a young student eager to learn about the arts to become a well-rounded individual, Iris will provide you with a holistic piano education that will not only prepare you for the technical demands of this instrument but also the critical understanding of music and its place in the arts and humanities.”May 22, 2020

I received advanced level lessons from Iris (Schumann Carnaval, Brahms Paganini Variations). I really enjoyed the lessons with Iris, she not only helped out a lot in thinking musically but also observed my particular technical and musical habits and was able to help me correct them and improve.Sep 21, 2016

Extremely thorough, very clear and nice. She suggested changes, and then we worked on it on the spot until she was happy enough with it so I had proper feedback on how it should sound and how I should work on it. Also went overtime with me, which was very generous of her. Highly recommend!Sep 19, 2016

- What is your typical process for working with a new customer? For students with prior experience studying music and/or piano, for the first lesson I will ask the student to prepare 1-2 pieces they have played before. I will also evaluate the student's experience in sight-reading (treble and bass clefs) and ear-training to gauge the student's reading, listening, rhythmic ability, and familiarity with the keyboard. I will then assign new repertoire, chosen in consultation with the student, and any additional ear-training and keyboard exercises that will help round out the student's musical abilities. For students without prior musical experience, I cover the basics in the first lesson, including posture at the piano, hand position, introducing the keyboard, and note reading in treble and bass clefs. We will work together to learn a new piece by the end of the lesson.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?I have graduate music degrees in piano performance from Juilliard and the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University. I have also coached undergraduate and graduate students at the New England Conservatory and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and served as faculty in secondary piano at Juilliard. Since 2010, I have additionally taught private and group piano lessons at various music schools for students ages 4-18 in NYC, Englewood, NJ, Baltimore, MD, and San Jose, CA. While working in Boston, I taught a full private studio in addition to teaching at a music school specializing in preparing students for ABRSM exams. My experience teaching students of all ages and backgrounds allows me to adapt and work effectively with each of my students to help them achieve their musical goals.
