As a piano teacher specializing in jazz education, I’m here to guide you through the nuances of this amazing musical artform. With years of experience and a deep passion for jazz, I help students who have studied traditional piano for at least four years to develop the skills to read, interpret, and play jazz effectively–especially within the context of middle-school and high-school jazz bands. All you’ll need is your phone or computer. I have had many remote students, and all have been very pleased with the effectiveness of our lessons. Join me for an exciting journey into jazz piano! Whether you’re learning jazz for the first time or trying to improve upon a skill set you already possess, I’m committed to helping you thrive as a young jazz pianist. Let’s get started! About Joel McCullough: I have 18 years of playing experience and nearly a decade of experience as an instructor. I studied jazz piano and composition at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) under the mentorship of the Grammy award-winning Kamau Kenyatta. While at UCSD, I received the Southern California Jazz Society award for best jazz composition. My compositions for the band Starsign earned us a nomination for best jazz album at the 2024 San Diego Music Awards. My first album made it onto Wicked Sound’s list of best jazz albums of 2021.

Joel has been teaching my 7 year old for about six months and he has been really great! He’s super patient and he makes the lessons fun, which is totally necessary for my son because he’s not exactly the most focused kid ever. He can already play some songs pretty well, which is honestly way more than I expected this soon. Joel really knows how to connect with kids, and it shows in how excited my son is for his lessons. If you're looking for a piano teacher who has the ability to maintain the interest of a hyper little child, Joel’s the guy for you

I'm enjoying my lessons with Joel so much. He gets in touch with me ahead of our lessons with ideas for me to review beforehand, and he always follows up throughout the week to see how things are progressing. I like the written feedback he gives each week as well. Really helps me to feel like I'm progressing quickly. I feel like I've gained a mentor, and not just a piano teacher! Try him out. I think youwill be impressed.

I am an adult learner. I don't have a lot of time to study or practice, so I didn't know how much progress I would be able to make as a piano student. Joel understands my time challenge and designs lessons and practice exercises that are really good for making progress. I am progressing at probably twice the speed I assumed I would. And he is so nice and funny and professional. I look forward so much to my hour-long lesson with him each week. I highly recommend Joel!

Joel is a one-of-a-kind piano teacher. My 11-year-old son is musically-inclined but hated traditional piano lessons and especially hated practicing. Joel’s approach was completely different! He immediately started working on pieces of music that my son requested. It was the first time my kid liked going to piano lessons. Joel is also a really nice guy— he’s sweet, super patient, fun, responsible, and a talented musician in his own right. I recommend him wholeheartedly for all ages.
