We highly recommend Kazmi & Sakata as immigration attorneys. The visa / immigration process is complex with many bumps that can cause you to start over creating delays and significant expense. Our situation included a visa change of status and working through a spousal visa. Harun was indispensable and shepherded the process of much paperwork and the final interview to a successful conclusion in a relatively short time. He was very responsive to our questions by phone and email and we found their fee schedule to be very fair (based on extensive research). When working with the government on immigration issues, having knowledgeable and effective representation is absolutely necessary in our opinion and less expensive in the longer term. Again – we highly recommend Kazmi & Sakata.

My husband and I hired Mr Saman as our immigration attorney to assist us during our immigration journey in the United States, as I am from Italy, and my husband is an American citizen. Not only was Saman available at all times, and answered all the numerous questions we had, he also helped us consider a multitude of options for my husband and I to be together in order to avoid long-distance relationships. What made Saman impeccable at his work was the fact that he could really relate to each and all concerns we had; he was extremely familiar with visa procedures and green card applications, and his positive attitude helped us become acquainted with immigration law, which was a world unknown to us. During my green card application process, he explained every step of the way in such simple words that it was hard not to do things properly. Saman was extremely reliable, precise, and very pleasant to deal with. My green card application was such an easy process, especially considering what I had heard about it until then. I (along with my husband) am so grateful that Saman has been part of our journey, and even now that I have been a permanent resident for a year, we are still in contact, and he is always so prompt to offer help, and provide answers. We have no hesitation in recommending his legal services. He is excellent, passionate about what he does, and most importantly he wears his heart on his sleeves, which undoubtedly is a quality that we truly appreciate. Thanks so very much Saman.

I got in a pretty bad car accident in July of 2015. I was rear ended so bad that my car was labeled as a total loss. I looked around for a good attorney for a few weeks. After reading reviews, and talking to friends, the name Chris Mova with Mova Law Group came up the most. So, I decided to call him to see if I wanted to hire him. Chris personally talked to me on the phone, explained what my options were and asked me if I wished to meet him face-to-face at his office. I met him at his office a few days later and I decided to hire him. He was a wonderful communicator, sincere, and genuinely interested my recovery and well-being. Whenever I called him, he was either immediately available, or he called me back within a few hours. He and his staff took care of everything promptly and professionally. I waited for him to tell me what to do, and when to do it. He usually called me every few weeks to give me an update on my file and to find out how I was doing, which I really appreciated because the last lawyer I hired went MIA after I hired him. Chris fought hard with the insurance company, they weren't being reasonable in the beginning. It wasn't until he showed them a copy of the lawsuit he planned on filing that they finally decided to pay for my injury. He is as aggressive of a lawyer as I have seen (based on his letters to the insurance company), but yet so friendly and nice with me. This is completely irrelevant, but I found out that Chris is HUGE animal lover. He rescued two dogs and fosters dogs that are abused or about to get euthanized by the kill shelter. I think this speaks volumes to his character. If you decide to hire Mova Law Group because you got injured, consider yourself fortunate to have Chris Mova in your corner. A real upstanding guy.

Linda was our immigration lawyer for my husband’s green card AND for my stepdaughters green card application process, both with passports from West Africa. My husband’s case was complicated, as he was working on a North American artist tour and his status was atypical (p1 visa that expired but his employer issued a petition of employment so he was still technically legal) at the time of our application. Linda actually had to help his employer fix the technical issue with that petition before we were able to submit his application. She worked all hours until the problem was fixed, and I couldn’t have asked for a more loyal person or a better outcome. We hired Linda in July 2016 and he had his green card by February 2017. We sent the application for my husband’s daughter to come to the United States in March 2017, and my petition application was already approved and she should be here in a couple more months! Linda has helped us so much and I highly recommend her for any immigration litigation. Furthermore, her prices were the most reasonable out of all the places I spoke with in the entire San Diego county. I couldn’t be more satisfied.

I recently had a problem with a business deal and was not able to settle it it on my own. I didn't want to engage in litigation knowing that the costs of retaining a lawyer and going to court is not only expensive but doesn't guarantee you will win. Since i moved here from Los Angeles a few years ago I didn't know many lawyers but a good friend recommend that I meet Steven RIZNYK from San Diego biz law. My meeting with Steven was excellent. He understood my problems and assured me that all that was needed was good negotiations. He met with the attorney from the other company and was able to work out a settlement in my favor. Steven is a true professional and his service charge were very fair. I recommend him and his company to anyone in need of a lawyer who also knows business and speaks for you.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does an immigration attorney do?

Immigration lawyers help their clients through all phases of the immigration process. Experts on immigration law, they are legally qualified to represent U.S. citizens, permanent residents or undocumented immigrants. Immigration lawyers also provide assistance to visitors here on student, work or travel visas, and can represent clients who may have an expired visa or who have overstayed their visa.

You can hire an immigration lawyer to assist you with petitioning for renewing a permanent resident or green card, navigating the naturalization process, submitting an employee-based petition for a work visa, filing a petition for a family member, or representing you or a loved one who is facing detention or deportation, as well as replacing, extending or changing a current visa, green card or work permit. The immigration process is highly complex, with multiple hearings, paperwork and requirements. Hiring a legal expert to represent you can help you make your best effort in the process. When researching immigration lawyers, it is very important to verify their qualifications and find a reputable attorney. Read reviews and verify that the immigration lawyer is licensed by your state before paying any fees.

How do you find a good immigration lawyer?

Research is key to finding a good immigration lawyer. The immigration process can be overwhelming and complex, so a trustworthy advocate is critical. When you have identified several eligible candidates, verify their immigration law license to protect yourself and your finances. Once you have a set of licensed immigration lawyers in mind, choose one based on these considerations:

    • Mutual respect: You want an immigration lawyer who treats you and your family with kindness and consideration. You’ll do the same for them.
    • Availability: Before hiring, note if they have responded promptly to your emails and calls. You don’t want to hire someone you have to chase around.
    • Proven success: Read former client reviews and research their success rate with cases similar to yours.
    • Transparent rates: Ask directly about what their rates are, how they bill, and what they estimate your legal fees will be. Ask if they will sign a fee agreement, and get receipts for all fees paid.
    • Verify who will handle your case: Sometimes junior lawyers work on firm cases. This is okay, as long as you have discussed it and are comfortable with it. When junior lawyers or paralegals are working on your case, ask if the hourly rate is lower.
    • Be wary of anyone who promises you specific results: No case is certain, and the immigration lawyer should be honest about what you can expect.

How much does an immigration lawyer cost?

Immigration lawyers are experts in the nuances of the highly complex United States immigration system. They help clients of all backgrounds petition for immigration status and become U.S. citizens, and can represent clients who are facing deportation or detention. Nationally, the cost people pay for immigration lawyers averages $500-$1,010. The services you need will have a huge effect on your costs. For routines cases, such as applying for a travel visa, an immigration lawyer may be able to confidently quote you a set price, while more open-ended cases may be billed at an hourly rate of $200-$500, or more, depending on the reputation and experience of the firm and lawyer. Before hiring an immigration lawyer, ask what their plan for your case is and what expected costs may be. Many immigration lawyers work from retainers, and request a set amount of money upfront from which to work. For example, a lawyer who charges $300 per hour may estimate $4,000 for a standard family-based immigration case, the common process in which a U.S. citizen petitions for permanent residency for their spouse, fiancee or family members.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
