Taking ownership of something like that does show professionalism, which does deserve credit and deserves to be mentioned as a positive.

Despite the fact I listed what the issue I was having and also the particular water heater that I have, the first tech arrived and said that what he would need to do (which was exactly what I said needed to be done) he couldn't, so he would send a tech tomorrow.
The tech the next day took a look at the water heater and decided since he had never worked on that brand, he couldn't do it (despite having told them what water heater it was in advance).
Total waste of my time.
Now there is some positive. Both techs were very professional and very nice. Also, the office side of it did own up to it being their miss on not paying attention to what I told them in advance - and admitting to things like that does carry a lot of weight for me.
But I still don't have a solution and wasted half a week working with them to try and get it done. In reality, a good plumber should be able to handle this routine maintenance - it is most likely just using some steel wool to clean the ignitor (and one of their concerns was maybe not finding the part, but I found those online with a call to the number in the manual). The manual has the isometric exploded view, showing exactly how to get to the ignitor to do this - and the tech had access to this when he was here - so looks like I am left on my own.
