Carl has been helping my son on his reading and writing for almost a year. We like his service very much. Carl keeps us updated on my son's progress and notifies us if he thinks we should be involved, such as my son was not focusing in the online tutoring session, or my son expressed some frustration at school. We love hearing from Carl and appreciate his time and efforts on my son.

My son was struggling with a first-year college English course. On a whim, I started searching and reaching out to other professionals. Carl responded to the challenge within an hour. Due to the compressed timeline, few would have accepted the task! Fast forward to present day (~1.5 years), my son is not only speaking and writing more clearly, but has increased his confidence and considers Carl a friend! Whether your child is in kindergarten or college, I highly recommend Carl as an ethical educator and motivator.

FAQs

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

I am open to reducing my hourly fee based on any of these factors: -- the client is willing to meet me at a convenient location that reduces my own driving time -- the length of the lesson is 90 minutes or more -- the frequency of lessons is more than once-per-week

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

I begin with a telephone conversation during which the client and I discuss his/her specific needs and goals and the ways in which I can help realize them. We then schedule a first lesson during which we get to know one another and feel comfortable working together. The lesson can take place at the client's home, office or a nearby cafe/coffeeshop.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wesleyan University (Middletown, CT) in history and European literature. My coursework in college required of me to devote extensive time to reading and writing, and this process strengthened my ability to articulate my ideas in writing and speaking in a precise, sophisticated and succinct fashion. I have a Master's degree in Education from Lesley University (Cambridge, MA). My coursework there along with my classroom practicum/internship experience instilled in me tremendous insight into the quailities and work habits that make one an effective teacher. In my 35-year teaching career, I have worked as a Grade 4 classroom teacher, a history teacher to Grades 6-9 (American, European, Asian, and ancient history), a library studies teacher, a children's drama teacher and theater director, and a school communications writer and editor.
