Math Tutoring

I wanted a tutor to challenge my kids (7, 10)in math as they both love the subject and I did not want them to fall behind during this pandemic. Carl was very attentive to both children's needs and consistently challenged them. The kids loved their time with him. The reason I stopped the lessons is because of zoom fatigue. I hope to ask him for 'math fun' for my kids in the future.

Reading and Writing Tutoring

Carl tutored my 11-year old in reading comprehension and my 14-year old in Algebra and grammar/punctuation. By the end their time with him, both showed much more confidence in their abilities to learn new concepts and digest the material effectively. According to my kids, Carl can explain challenging concepts in a way that makes it easy to understand and retain. Although we no longer need a tutor for our sons, if the need arises again, we won’t hesitate to call on him!

Reading and Writing Tutoring

Carl is a stellar tutor and I strongly suggest those who want to learn advanced essay writing to contact Carl. Carl helped transform my essay skills, especially in the categories of formal writing, vocabulary, and grammar. As a high school senior, I wanted to gain a foundation for future college research papers. Because I plan to major in history, we focused on editing a historical position paper. However, I truly recommend Carl for help in any other subject as well, as he has a great passion to teach. When he scrutinized aspects of my writing, I felt he was truly striving for perfection. I was impressed the way that he could help me transform my writing from being simple and flawed to college-level. Even though we were working with difficult material, he explained concepts to me in a way that was easy to understand. I am pleased with the progress I have made under my sessions of Carl, and I know he has the experience and patience to tutor you.

Writing and Editing Services

Carl is terrific. He's direct, straightforward, transparent, and most importantly was willing to start immediately, no questions asked. He was understanding of my situation and delivered exactly what I needed. Would definitely recommend him! He was also extremely accommodating and did not demand payment up front. In fact he REFUSED to accept payment until he completed the job and it's obvious he cares about the quality of his work. Looking forward to working with him in the future!

FAQs

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

I am open to reducing my hourly fee based on any of these factors: -- the client is willing to meet me at a convenient location that reduces my own driving time -- the length of the lesson is 90 minutes or more -- the frequency of lessons is more than once-per-week

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

I begin with a telephone conversation during which the client and I discuss his/her specific needs and goals and the ways in which I can help realize them. We then schedule a first lesson during which we get to know one another and feel comfortable working together. The lesson can take place at the client's home, office or a nearby cafe/coffeeshop.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wesleyan University (Middletown, CT) in history and European literature. My coursework in college required of me to devote extensive time to reading and writing, and this process strengthened my ability to articulate my ideas in writing and speaking in a precise, sophisticated and succinct fashion. I have a Master's degree in Education from Lesley University (Cambridge, MA). My coursework there along with my classroom practicum/internship experience instilled in me tremendous insight into the quailities and work habits that make one an effective teacher. In my 35-year teaching career, I have worked as a Grade 4 classroom teacher, a history teacher to Grades 6-9 (American, European, Asian, and ancient history), a library studies teacher, a children's drama teacher and theater director, and a school communications writer and editor.
