- How did you get started doing this type of work?
I started as an assistant teacher for 1st grade students at the University of Chicago Lab Schools and was incredibly interested in the work the specialist did with the kids who were struggling with reading. The confidence and overall changes in reading that she brought out in these kids made me want to learn more about how to help kids who were struggling to rise above their learning challenges. Later, I took on a job with a grassroots organization that taught reading enrichment seasonally throughout the country. I was extensively trained in techniques to enrich and strengthen reading development and gained much experience teaching 8-10 classes per week throughout the midwest and Texas for two years. I was hooked on learning further techniques to help bridge the gap in learning and began gaining training through LindaMood Bell and many other programs that are effective so that I could help kids one on one.
