The art of blacksmithing derived from the ancient artisan crafts focused on armor and agriculture which developed into an art form during the Renaissance period. The early techniques and skills were developed and passed down through generations, responding to the materials and desires of the period. Artisan blacksmithing pays reverence to the ancient practices demanding the following: * Design with joinery methods that are aesthetically pleasing and add interest to the finished work * Heating, hammering and forging, which result in the resizing and shaping of the metal, as well as drawing out the depth of character and development of the patina The intimate relationship between the metal, the artist and the process of heating, stretching and hammering give way to the creativity that merges historical techniques with contemporary ideas for metalwork.
