Contracted West Coast Flooring (Andrey) to sand and refinish floors. Andrey advised they would remove and reinstall the toilets. We emptied the house. Work that was to take about 1 week ended up taking 2 weeks. We would randomly stop by during the sanding process and find no one there but we were assured they would finish on time. The workers clearly worked hard when they were there but it was apparent they were not dedicated to completing this job in one push. Because we were not living in the house anymore, we had flexibility on time. However, from the start, WE were the ones notifying Andrey that things were not at the stage where they should be given his timelines. Throughout the project, Andrey resisted communicating status, revised timelines, surfacing obstacles and preferred to hide the details of the work from us. There is definitely a cultural bias here toward appearing strong and masking the finer details that are germane and material to homeowners. As it turns out the workers decided to take a pedestal sink out of the bathroom as well as its toilet. We only learned later that they did NOT in fact remove the toilet in the back of the house and never told us this. After 2.5 weeks they completed the work in early October and the floors looked much improved. We did have them replace word for a transition between the kitchen and back porches which were floored in pine that they did in a rainforest wood with mahogany grain nothing like the clear pine of the floors on either side so it stuck out like a sore thumb in the center of the flow in the back half of the house. On the whole their floor work was worth what we paid. Their project management, communication and transparency were NOT. And if you can live with people like this, enjoy the product. But we had a plumbing problem from their work I will describe. When the floor refinishing was complete, we put the empty house on the market for 6 weeks. During this time no one lived there or used the toilets or sinks. We decided to rent the house. The tenants moved in 3 weeks later. By this time the work had been completed about 50 days before the tenants moved in. As soon as they did, they reported a pool of pool of water in the basement under the back toilet and the master bathroom sink was leaking all over the new floor. We called in a licensed plumber who charged $250 per hour the normal rate in California post-Covid for a professional, not a handyman. He found the toilet in the back had not been seated correctly. I asked the plumber to reseat that toilet and the main one as well as fix the leaking sink. As it turns out the main toilet’s mounting bolts had been damaged when the flooring crew removed or replaced it. The plumber also found that the sink drain was cracked in 3 places and its pedestal was not mounted to the basin. This took 9 hours to fix, so about $2025. I raised this issue to Andrey and ONLY THEN did he inform me that they had decided not to take out the back toilet and not tell me….so that toilet’s problem was not his fault. He admitted that the main toilet and sink were touched by his team so he would begrudgingly pay half the repair cost. He then began to argue that I should have called him to make the repairs (the people who caused the issue in the first place), and then belittled me for paying $250 for a plumber which he said “only lawyers make that much”. Despite this, he agreed in writing over text to send me a check. One week later, no check. Surprise! I texted him and he said he would check and I had to remind him again to check. He then claimed he mailed a check. 10 days later no check. Surprise! I texted him and he won’t respond.
