FAQs
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
Since I work with Union musicians, we follow Local 47 Union rates. The scales are too long to list, but the more details I know such as time of day, number of hours, and the location of the event, for example, the easier it will be for me to figure the cost of hiring the musicians. I do a detailed contract for the client so that the event will be a huge success with regards to the musicians that are to be hired for their special occasion. For lessons, I charge an additional $15 if I have to travel to the student, outside of the San Fernando Valley to cover gas, to and from the venue.
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Regarding events: I have the customer tell me in detail what type of event they want to have and how the music will add to that event. I need to know the styles of music and if they have any special requests which usually can be fulfilled. Classical, ethnic, and popular, such as golden oldies, are usually the styles featured. Strings, piano, and any special added instruments the client needs, may be added, if I have access to that type of instrumentalist. Singers may also be added. If a band or jazz style is requested, then that may be possible, if not too large and if some strings can be added to that. I have a full contract put together for events, usually with Union fees, unless done in someone's home. Lessons: whatever fits the student level, I try to go with. I listed all the particulars regarding lessons.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I think that being in various places with friends and going to alumni events have helped to keep me up on what are the latest developments in the music field. Being a Local 47 Union member is a plus in that their Overture newspaper keeps their membership up on what is going on in the "music biz"! My ethnomusicology background and Ph.D. in that field have exposed me to all types of music from around the world. I am a professional 'cellist and pianist with a BM and MA in the music performing field. I have also coached movie stars such as Samuel L. Jackson for his role as a 'cello playing cop in "No Good Deed."
