About
I am a longtime educator and chess coach with over 40 years of teaching experience, dedicated to making chess both fun and meaningful for everyone. My approach blends patience with interactive lessons tailored to each student’s needs, energy, and interests. I believe chess is more than a game—it’s a tool for building confidence, resilience, and thoughtful decision-making. In my private instruction, I work with students of all ages and skill levels—from those brand new to the game to advanced players around 2000 ELO. I have also guided a teacher in launching an after-school chess program, and my experience extends to working with children of all backgrounds, including students on the autism spectrum and with ADHD. My lessons emphasize growth, engagement, and adaptability, always keeping learners motivated and inspired. I competed in tournaments in Belgium (under-21 championships, at ages 13-14), as well as in California, Ohio, and Illinois, and studied under the late great GM Anatoly Lein and IM Calvin Blocker, a 15-time Ohio state champion. Beyond private instruction, I am the founder and organizer of the weekly Palo Alto chess meetup, where I foster a welcoming environment for players of all ages to learn, connect, and grow. With over five decades of playing experience, I bring both deep knowledge of the game and a warm, student-centered approach. Outside of chess, I am also passionate about skiing and music: I was on the Belgian National Alpine Ski Team for years and competed in international under-18 events. I am natively bilingual in English and French, with conversational Spanish.

David has given me and my husband chess lessons and also hosts a chess meetup and teaches kids. David is an outstanding chess player himself, but what's even more important, he is a gifted teacher. No two lessons, no two teaching relationships are the same with him; he has a natural gift to engage and be effective with any student. He doesn't just teach the moves, but teaches a love of the game, coupled with a much deeper understanding of its mechanics. Which will take you (or your children) way beyond where they would end up with other teachers.

I’ve known David for over 20 years: Our families go back to the kids-love-soccer days. And in all that time, he has been someone we’ve admired and appreciated. Recently, I started taking chess lessons with David, and in just three months, my game has improved dramatically. David’s teaching style is structured, comprehensive, and tailored to the level of each student. What makes him truly stand out is how he interweaves lessons from the great chess masters, their classic books, and the best online resources into his own material. Every session feels like a blend of timeless wisdom and modern insights. Beyond his expertise, David brings patience, warmth, and genuine passion for the game. He makes learning chess both challenging and fun, the progress shows. David knows how to inspire improvement in every student, his lessons blend strategy, tactics, and mindset, always delivered in a way that is engaging and motivating. Beyond his skill as a chess teacher, David brings warmth, patience, and genuine enthusiasm to every session. He makes learning both challenging and fun, which is a rare and valuable combination. If you’re looking for someone who not only knows chess inside and out but also knows how to bring out the best in his students, I can’t recommend David highly enough. He is a great coach and an even greater person.

David is a very capable instructor who is able to explain concepts and ideas expertly to students. He is engaging and provides material that maintains a reasonable pace for the student, yet pushes them to strive for more. I highly recommend his methodology and teaching style for students of all levels.
